I know most folks here love movies where the protagonists get fucked up beyond repair, shit hits the ceiling fan and characters crumble to bits and pieces.
Just saw the movie and I was surprised I had never heard of it before (or mentioned in the numerous movie recommendation threads that keep popping up). In a nutshell, it's about a thirteen-year-old girl whose friendship with a 'bad girl' turns into a one-way ride on the highway to hell. Sex, drugs, rebellion, whiny bitchy tantrums, wrist-slicing, self-destruction et al - I'm sure it's been done before. If there are movies that do it better, I most certainly would like to know.
The lead trio Evan Rachel Wood (the tormented girl), Nikki Reed (the negative influence) and Holly Hunter (the mother whose patience is put to the ultimate limit) absolutely owned the movie - particularly in the final confrontation scene. If Requiem for a Dream gripped you by the balls, there are scenes in this movie that will cause you to flinch and cringe on your couch.
For what appears to be an ultra low-budget movie, the visual style is in-your-face and definitely leaves an impression. I have tremendous respect for the cast & crew now; I'm surprised I haven't seen any of their other work.
Recommended for solid acting and that oh-so-wonderful way movies can disturb you; doubly so if you are a parent.
