-> Third CD Drive, help please! <-

I recently got a 40x cd-r to add to my dvd-rom and 12x cd-r. I don't want to take out my old cd-r drive (that would be a waste), but I am not sure what to do with the jumper settings on the third drive. I have two questions;

1) Should I set the jumpers to slave or to cable select (cable select "eliminates having to set master or slave", but i'm not sure it is right.
2) How do I connect it to a different "channel"?

by #2) I mean whenever I use Nero, it says that for best results the dvd drive and cd drive should be on different "channels". How do I do this?

Thanks for all your help!

Look at your motherboard and you'll see two flat ribbon cables coming from it and going to your optical and hard drives. Each cable is one channel and each channel can only accomodate 2 devices. If you have two devices on one channel, one must be set to master and the other must be set to slave. Don't bother with cable select. Nero is recommending that you put the DVD and CDRW on different channels because they're assuming that you will be doing disc to disc copying. However, if you think you'll be doing more burning from the hard drive, then put the hard drive and CDRW on different channels.

Are you sure only 2 devices are alowed? THat would mean I need to take out my old drive, because I have 2 hard drives.

Yes, take out the old burner. It will not be a waste. It served you well, right? Do you feel you got your money's worth out of the drive? Then it's not a waste. Keep it in the closet in case of a late night disaster with your new drive. 🙂

And, yeah, only 2 devices per channel.

If you insist on having 3 optical drives and 2 HD's, then you need to buy a hard drive controller card.
