ThinkPad X40 spotted!

it seems like it's using integrated graphics though, a little bit of a step down from the X31, but nice for its purpose.
 
it says it uses intel exterme graphics 2, which may acutally be a step up from the 16MB Radeon mobility. I have a X31 and the gfx card is sooooooo slow

I'm not so sure about that - I remember reading in AnandTech's review of the X31 that IBM said they went with the Radeon because the performance of the Intel solution was terrible.

Though I certainly understand IBM's choice. Nether solution is really adequate for 3D games or applications, and I don't think anyone uses an X series for 3D stuff anyways. Thus, it would be cheaper (and more space efficient) to use the Intel solution, and the end users, who typically don't use the machine for 3D apps, would never know the difference.
 
I was debating between X31 and Fujitsu 5020D, but now X40 is my first choice. I want one 🙂
 
Funny thing - do a Google X40 search on ibm.com
and see what comes up on the first page. Google has cached an aborted announcement of the X40 in the US around Tuesday 12/16 .... (The current versions of the page don't have any mention of the X40.)

I'm thinking of getting an X31 pretty soon - but wondering about what X40 pricing in the US is going to be. Perhaps they've decided to hold off until after Christmas? (Also may decide I want the additional speed of the 1.6 P-M and gigabit ethernet sounds nice too.)

If I'd caught the 1.4 & slice deal at 1274 probably would have done that. And, of course, once Dothan comes out in February there may be another round of price cuts. Wacky times...
