I think this is a hardware issue, but when i hook up an external monitor to my laptop, it displays the desktop fine. When i move the mouse into the display area, it goes black. After about 5-6 seconds, the mouse shows up on the screen, but there is horizontal banding where the mouse is.

The monitor works just fine with another laptop.

Does this sound like a hardware issue, or maybe something with drivers? If it's hardware, where's a good place to get it fixed? Would I have to replace the whole motherboard?

Yep, sounds like the internal video of the unit is having problems. That or its not detecting the monitor correctly and needs to be configured.

If possible, try it with a different external monitor. As of niow, it can be the T60's graphics system, the video drivers, or the monitor itself. Also consider the cable as a separate item worthy of diagnostics. And, another thought - is the result the same with the Trackpoint or Touchpad as opposed to a mouse? Is it a USB mouse? Wired or wireless? You see, there are a lot of diagnostic open ends here.
