I've got my gf's laptop fixed (battery's dead)
Now, I would like to upgrade to win95, and I know that the drive was partitioned. I would like to upgrade to win98se, however, I want to format the drive c because I want to make the dvd works in the US region. (The laptop was bought out of US -other region on dvd).

My quesiton is if I format c: will the d: will be wiped as well?

Thanks

thanks docdon;

Does it mean if I format c: and installed win98 on it, I should get a new region for the dvd, correct?

This machine has dvd player. Apparently, I can't run the US DVD because it's not the right region. and I am hoping that I could get it working by formatting c drive and installed d drive.

Probably so, I believe most (all?) of the SW DVD players use the registry to store their regions, and the registry is on C:. Now, some of the DVD players allow you to change the region a few (5) times before locking it. Have you looked to see if you have that option? In any event, moving from Win95 to Win98 is a Good Thing. You might consider going to Win2K while you're at it, Win2K's heads above any of the 9x versions, IMHO.

Last, I always partition my drives into C: and D:, with D: as my "data" partition -- where I store my email, documents, pictures, so on. I let C: work as my OS and application partition so, in the case where I want/need to wipe out my OS I can do so without losing my data that's safely tucked away in D:. I also like to create a "Win98" (or Win2K, etc) directory in D:, and copy all the Windows CAB files from the installation disk into it (along with setup.exe, etc.) That way, you can boot from a floppy, a:\> format c:, then reinstall Windows simply by d:\win98> setup.exe. Saves time and later, when Windows bugs you to "Please insert your Windows installation disk" you can just point it to the D:\win98 directory.

James: to get the region free, you need both the hardware and software region free. To change the region on software is easy but to change the drive into region free, you need to patch the firmware which you can get it at somewhere. PM me if you need the link.
