thinkpad or vaio?

I checked out the T60, and like the 14.1" screen but it's only available with the bluetooth or wireless WAN, both of which I can do without.



i'll keep searching on the internet and check back for more advice.

Call Lenovo's 800 # for sales.... They don't post all their models on their website.... Give them another chance.

ok, starting to check out the x serires thinkpad.

performance wise, are the x series just as good as t series? i've only had a t40 which i love. think i will be fine going from 14.1" to 12.1" i noticed that with the x series, i'd have to purchase the ultrabase in order to add dvd 8x max dual layer or cd/dvd rom. am i better off sticking to the t series?

performance wise, yes. you can get better video card with t series tho. you do not need ultrabase, you can go a cheaper route with just external dvd drive. the question will be down to if you need an optical drive at all? I have a desktop, so optical drive is really optional except when I need to reformat. virtual drive works wonder.

you lost me at "optical" and "virtual." can you explain? thanks.

Optical drive = cd drive, physical device
Virtual drive = image of a CD - data is placed on your hard drive and a program is used to fool the computer into thinking that the CD data on the hard drive is actually a physical drive (a virtual drive).

oh, is this the same as what my friend did for me when he downloaded "daemon tools" and mounted the CD program to my computer? That way I dont' need the CD - it's right there in my laptop already.

I dunno, I guess I feel more comfortable having the optical drive...but with flash drives these days, I find I use that more than CDs.

Yeah, that's exactly what Daemon Tools does. Having an optical drive built in can be a nice feature, but if it is not used a lot, an external drive could be a better option since it allows for a lighter laptop package.

if you have another desktop or laptop at home and on your network, you can just stream it.

To the original poster: The VAIO N series is one of the worst computers I have ever seen or felt. It absolutely felt like a plastic toy. There is a reason why it is Sony's least expensive notebook. Other VAIOs are nice but not the N series.

I can give some thoughts on T vs. X. I own my own T43 (purchased about 2 years ago), 14" SXGA+ screen. I also work with a X60 tablet. The major compromise is, of course, screen real estate. I personally think having high resolution is absolutely essential and I don't think I could deal with an XGA 1024x768 screen for my primary working machine. SXGA+ at 1400x1050 is a significant jump. Then again, if you must have a tablet or you need portability more than anything else, then the X60 could be a solid option.

looks like they got rid of the 14.1" T60s from the website. they got a memorial day sale - will have to check that out.

i think i most likely will stick with the T60s, but widescreen looks like my only choice unless i call them up and they still have the T60s 14.1" available.
