The documentation (press the 'thinkpad' on upper left keyboard) said there was a S-video converter cable shipped with the computer, but I didnot find any. Maybe IBM stopped doing a lot of things they usually do.;-)

BTW, as some one mentioned, it doesn't feel as heavy as it look.

For memory, I only trust Kingston.
Is some program crashed, I don't want to be skeptical on memory first.
Also PC2700 is better.
So I will stick with newegg's $73 Kingston.

I agree, PC2700 is better. Free shipping... it is a MUST have for this laptop! I am receiving my thinkpad tomorrow. Anyone has any idea if the
processor can be upgraded ?

oh, i thought you had to have the same memory type as the other memory and what the machine supports. online specs say 266 MHz PC2100 DDR SDRAM, SODIMM. or is this no longer the case?

Well, it won't run faster than PC2100, so the benefit isn't on the speed.
But PC2700 is usually better built than PC2100.

Yes, the CPU can be upgraded, however, mobile CPUs generally cost a bundle and in most cases, the cost isn't worth the upgrade.

For those that are interested in 802.11, you can buy a Dell Truemobile 1150 relabeled Orinoco gold mini PCI card and plug it into the mPCI slot. This is assuming that your modem and NIC is CDC based however. IBM also sells their own relabeled Prizm II and Cisco Aironet 350 mini PCI cards.

If you do get the internal mini PCI units, the wireless antenna assembly that goes on the sides of your LCD (IBM FRU part #27L0684) might also be an interest. Though keep in mind that installing the wireless antennas will require you to disassemble your notebook.

Also, for those on a budget crunch, the internal mini PCI solution WILL cost quite a bit more instead of just buying a PCMCIA based WNIC.

For the extra ultrabay, I'd suggest getting a second 4000mAh battery (~80/will increase the notebook battery to ~4hrs) or if you want a floppy drive (~30).

It seems the internal Wi-Fi upgrade will cost approximately $200 ($100 for the mini-PCI card, and $100 for the antenna cable). It may be better to stay with a poor reception PC card, which could be got at $20.

Is there a deal for the Ultrabay 2000 battery? The least I searched was around $120.

Beware that if you get a DOA laptop from Microwarehouse, you're in for a world of fun trying to get them to make it right. I wasn't aware of their returns policy when I placed an order by phone yesterday. They will not (or say they will not) accept returns of DOA equipment from IBM, Compaq, or most other major manufacturers; they say to contact the manufacturer. The manufacturer told me to send it back to Microwarehouse. Anyone think a credit card company will help me with a dispute like this?

Thanks for any helpful advice!

check out their return policy on their site, it says

"If your product is not functioning properly, please call our Technical Support Department at 1-800-285-7080 as soon as possible (but not later than 30 days from purchase). In most instances, our highly skilled Tech Support representatives can assist you in diagnosing and resolving your product problems. However, in rare instances, a product is defective. In such case, we will replace the product with an even exchange of the same item, subject to in-stock availability."

it says nothing about not accepting DOA from major manufacturers... does it say anything on your reciept? I'd say it's grounds to dispute it w/ your credit card. after talking to your credit card company and hopefully starting the dispute process, i'd call microwarehouse back and tell them you are doing this, maybe then they'll take you serious and take care of you. be as nice as possible to whoever you talk to, many times they are just following policy.

i'd also say something like you need a working laptop asap and you dont have time to mess around, and that you are realli impressed with how fast they got it to you but you are extremely disappointed in them and would be real reluctant to use them again, you'll trll your friends and people on forums and give bad reviews for them on web sites, blahblahblah.... i've done stuff like this and gotten my way... but i wasn't a jerk.

good luck. sorry about your probs, mine works great!

Thanks for the moral support. On the receipt is this language, which is what their support people repeated to me over the course of several phone calls to them tonight:

"Certain manufacturers policies prohibit us from accepting any returns of their products and require all returns to be made directly to them."

Then the list the manufacturers, which include: Apple, Intel, IBM, Compaq, Toshiba, NEC, Xerox, Sony, HP, and a few others. I see this now on their website also under "Returns Policy". I, however, ordered via phone and was not warned of any of this. I will try raising it some more with them tomorrow. Arghhh!

Microwarehouse sells extended warranty both from IBM and through servicenet. You have to call them up to get the extended warranty.

I think the one from servicenet is a better deal : $99 - 2 years on site, $149 - 3 years onsite, $209 - 4 year onsite
I believe the equivalent from IBM (http://www.pc.ibm.com/support/qtechinfo/MIGR-4BCKBA.html), click on the link ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/tpsrvpac.pdf) : $132- 3 YR depot repair (mail in repair), $243 - 3 YR onsite repair 9x5/next day. IBM also has other warranty (http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/accessories/services/index.html , look for IBM protection services where you can buy a 3 year extended warranty plus accidental damage such as coffee spill, drops or falls. for $299)

There is also another company call wwwsafeware.com, they sell insurance for notebook, the price is really reasonable, for 1200 you only pay $39 / year.

Hope this is helpful for those who wants some peace of mind.

Of course, most credit cards have benefits that you are covered for another year.

arg... anyone have experience with FedEx mixups? Apparently, they delivered it on Friday and left it at my front door... no signature. I came home in the evening and thought they had left it with the Apartment leasing office (usually where packages go) which was closed for the weekend. Upon checking with them this morning, they said that they never received it. Called FedEx, they confirmed that it had just been left outside my apartment. I think it was stolen... They said they're looking into it, and when I called microwarehouse, they said that they'll replace it once FedEx confirms the mixup. unfortunately the laptop is back-ordered now...

what to do???

That's incredible that a signature wasn't required, absolutely incredible. I'd think that for an item worth over $1000 they would require that you sign in person, unquestionably. If the guy really left it at your front door that's irresponsible.

No kidding!

According to FedEx customer service, FedEx ground never requires signature. I talked to our apartment manager, who said that he has repeatedly told FedEx drivers to leave the package at the front desk, where he can sign for it, but they simply say that it is easier for them to just leave it in front of the apartment. Moreover, they don't seem to care, since they claim that insurance will cover it.

I'm only slightly concerned about the cost, as I'm pretty sure that I will at least get reimbursed when everything is sorted out. However, the two things that bother me are:

1. I may miss out on this laptop deal if they are sold out by the time everything comes through
2. Someone is out there with a brand new laptop PLUS a carrying case for FREE... ARGH... that just burns me...

Second day of use of mine. The trackpoint does not work any more. It just stoped working, it failed. Called technical support.
The guy run some diagnostic test over the phone..... and said: we'll either send you a new keyboard (with the trackpoint)
so you can replace it yourself or call customer service to replace the whole laptop. Called customer service and they do respond
ONLY from 9AM -6 PM. So I'd have to wait till tomorrow. It suks...a new laptop! Otherwise I love it....and it was a great deal....
then I start thinking is it just my bad luck (harware malfunction) or they really screwed up with this laptops and are giving them away
cheap!!! Well, maybe not, just my anger speaking.

And I spent so much time installing a bunch of programs in it. Anybody else had any problems! Any experiences with thei technical support
or customer service?
