I just went through this same decision... Well, between 9600GT and 8800GT 512. I actually ordered a XFX 9600GT and then UPS lost my package and I claimed a refund... I researched and read more, I have now ordered an Evga 8800GT 512MB.

Price difference was 20$ (after rebate).

The 9600GT XFX was 145$ AR
The 8800GT 512 eVGA was 165$ AR

I'm mainly upgrading to play Crysis, and the 8800 has enough over the 9600 to justify 20$ worth for the upgrade. At least that was my POV.

I'll also be able to crank up most of my other games to max res (1680x1050) and quality. And still be under 200$.

I eyed the 8800GTS 512 as well, but the added cost was no worth the added perf, for me. I think the cheapest GTS 512 I found was 215$ AR, 50$ more than the 8800GT..

And as others have said, EVGA and XFX support their cards even if you OC, so buy the cheaper (NON-OC'd) card and have some fun and OC it. :)

I was sold on the XFX if i were going w/ the 9600, but the EVGA 8800GT had a lot of praise on Newegg, and the cheapest price out of the 8800s!

I just picked up the eVga 8800GT 512 from the Egg as they have a nice rebate on it currently...and eVga is now giving 120 Days if you want to step up. Safe bet to me. I will say the eVga is very quiet.

To the best of my knowledge it's still 90 days for any product other than the 9800GX2, which is a 120 day step up.

True, but there aren't too many products between an 8800GT and the top of the 88xx line, so I still think this is a nice little bonus.
