I've been thinking of upgrading my desktop since cpu and memory prices aren't stupid high like video cards. Motherboards are a bit pricy though.

I game at 1440p on a 144hz monitor with an EVGA GTX 1080 SC. Some PUBG, some star wars battlegrounds, some other shooters, some mmos.

How much of an fps upgrade would I see if I upgraded from the R5 1600 1st gen to a current 12600k?

Also can I get some recommendations of memory that might play nice with it since single rank/ dual rank just confuses the hell out of me so please point me in the right direction. I am thinking of going with 32gb.

Thanks.

Ok I managed to build the system.. 12600k.. MSI z690 pro-a ddr4, DDR4 -3200 cl 16 gskill memory, and cooled with a coolermaster hyper 212 black edition (fan on rear pulling air through heatsink)

I'm not an Intel fanboy (more of an AMD one if you go by my old posts) but...

Intel has really nailed it with the 12600k.

I love MMO's and raiding. My FPS on them I think is more dependent on single core and frequency and I've seen a jump from 45-55 fps (during raids, heavy crows in towns) to 100-120ish. (not 144 but dayum).

In PUBG I've gone from 80 fps to 120's. All with the GTX1080 at 1440p.

I'm running all p-cores at 49 x 102.25 (5.03 ghz).. 1.115v vcore, mem at 1.365 and CPU seems to run at 60-65C.

So far I'm happy with this upgrade. Had some stability issues earlier on since I cloned over my old windows 10 but just increased the voltages a tad and removing amd drivers, installing INTEL ones it seems to have stabilized.

P.S. one negative.. I don't like the MSI bios.. always though asrock was simpler but I'll take the stability of the motherboard over a pretty looking bios. Maybe I just need time to get used to it.

From a crowded town in an old MMORPG. Double fps ugprade.

Always thought it was bad engine design as intel and amd couldn't push more than 45-55 fps in older games but dayum!

Not just the 12600K. You would probably have loved the i3-12100 too if that was all you could have afforded. The P-cores are screaming fast for gaming. When I think of them, I hear a Tie Interceptor screaming by. AMD has been demoted from A-wing to X-wing. They should be back to A-wing status with Zen 4 if nothing goes wrong.

@Indus

Welcome to 2022. Old Summit Ridge CPUs really aren't top notch anymore. You can get substantially faster CPUs now. And if you think that's impressive, wait until you see what happens in July/August . . .

Yes and I was comparing the 8700k.. the 12600k is a good 80% improvement over that too in single thread too.

However I don't think I will get a new platform for a 10-15% upgrade.. its just not efficient. However if its a drop in cpu upgrade I might consider it. Intel CPU's seem to hold their resale value quite well.. especially the K (non F) models.

Small update after a month..

I managed to squeeze out 5.1ghz all core @ 1.14v while still managing to keep it cool at 81C peak (most often 67-70C) with a hyper 212.

I think 1.14v is low enough that hopefully the silicon doesn't degrade over time. I had that happen with my previous ryzen 5 1600 where originally at 1.4 it could do 4.0ghz but within a week it was 3.9 and after a few years 3.8 was the highest it could do.

That said I'm curious about the voltages you guys are having to use to keep the 12600k stable. Please post your results with voltages and the 12600k.

I have the Gaming K4 version of your board, and it has been a jewel for going on 4yrs now. I have run 1600-2600-3600-3700x-3400g-3200g-Athlon 3000g in it. It will now take my 5800X if I so desired. Talk about bang for buck mobo. Only complaints are USB 3.0 front header dropout issues never fully fixed even with updates. I would have to try this new bios to conclude it is hopelessly nerfed.
............

Is the USB header issue a problem for b550/x570 motherboards or for Zen3 cpus? Because I would like to upgrade to a 5600 in future or to an AM5 platform because of how long lived the AM3/4 platforms were.

It has not happened on any of my B550 or X570 systems. Even my B450 ITX with a 5700g has been problem free. I mostly use the front header to plug in wired game controllers, RF wireless headset adapters, or USB storage of various types.

I have been experiencing a weird issue with a X570 system that I finally solved. What happens - I will be mixing it up with the weights with one of my Youtube music playlists cranking. I will hear the connect disconnect USB device sound. This happens with no devices plugged in. I was starting to think the board was flaky or something. I stopped this last times, and took a good look at the system. Tuns out, even without anything connected to it, the 12ft USB-C cable was causing it. I use it for my Oculus VR, and it was getting shaken around enough by the subwoofer, that it was losing contact with the port while vibrating. I neglected to read the specs on the cables, so I guess it is powered? Is why it can connect and disconnect without a device plugged in to it?

@Indus - You will have better luck getting answers about the 12600K in the Official Alder Lake builders thread.

More like a TIE Defender compared to X-wing. At least from Zen(+) to Alder Lake at least. But later AMD will have the K-Wing.
