Thinking of taking a managerial position at work. Hard to decide, emotional problems at play.

I've posted about this kind of thing before so feel free to skip this post if you like.

To make a LONG story short anxiety and depression have wrecked havoc with my life for quite few years now. They turned a promising educational carrier into so much past awards and high grades. I've lost track of the number of times I've doped out of university. The past 3 years I've been working at 7-11. Started out as a sales associate and for the past 2 1/2 years I've been the assistant manager. I've bin doing very well at this job but I've always looked at it as a temp job to save money to go back to school. I've saved up quite a bit in that time ($50,000+, but that's because I still live with my parents). And spent a lot of it (about 10,000 on entertainment and toys). I still plan on going back to school but recently an opportunity has opened up. The manager of my store is moving and the job is mine for the taking if I want it. Both the manager and district manager, plus innumerable customers, have all rooted for me if I go for it (the jobs as good as mine if I want to take it). Question is should I take it? In the long run I definitely want to go back to school but this has it's own allure too. Before this job I never had a real job and like I said I had terrible problems at university due to emotional problems (though I did very well when I could hack it). I've been relatively happy the past 3 years and this gives me the opportunity of having the first real workable salary (I've been making about 30K/yr and the new job would offer about 42K/yr). Question is should I keep the education on the back burner for now and go for this opportunity (looks good on the resume). Or should I take the plunge and use the savings to go back to school. I have definitely not solved all my emotional problems!!

Couldn't you always take the position and do some online/night classes at your local community college that will then transfer to a college/university?

Before trying to figure out the work/school thing I would look at the job being offered to see how it might affect my mental well being. As a manager, how many people would you be supervising? Do you like supervising and are you any good at it? Even though I was good at it, I was miserable as a supervisor. The stress sucked and I took the job home every night. I decided it wasn't how I wanted to spend my life and re-oriented my career path.

fuck, i dont know. flip a coin.

Yeah thanks for the support! Case you missed the first sentance if you don't give a shit feel free not to post.

Only reason I'm working at 7-11 is I have ongoing emotional problems. Said problems have gotten better but are still there and in the mean time my job has worked out fairly well. Recently a better opertunity has opened up and I'm thinking of taking it. No one said anything about working here forever. But a year or so more (especially in a more legit position) might help my confidence even more.

I hear 7-11 is an excellent place to deal with emotional problems.

i cared enough to post

you wont make a decision based on what we say, youll base it on how you feel. are you seeing a professional or just trying to deal with things on your own?

6 of one 1/2 a dozen of another. I suck at stress but crave attention. The managerial position doesn't inherently mean more work than what I am doing now, just all the responsibility falls on me. I've managed the store when the manager was away before for several months and I know I'm more than capable. Only question is will the stress do me in or will the stress at school do me in 😉

From my previous posts?

If you get free Slurpees when you are manager I say take the job.

No seriously, if you like your work and think you can do the job well, take the opportunity.

In the current environment you should not pass the chance up.

As others have said, look at night school or part time to further your education.

This, no reson to leave a good promotion and you should be able to take classes later when you're up to it. You could make a career out of 7-11 contrary to all the people saying it's a crap job. You can make a career out of any job. Management should help your confidence and you a great job while many have none.

30k a yr is great pay for living out of parents house. If the 42k causes you to not finish school, I'd say skip it and get that degree.

I make over 60k a yr but probably amounts to less than your 30k after rent, etc.

Take the position and take night classes. Seriously. Nothing says you are locked into anything-- Just look at it as a pay raise for the time being (if you weren't offered the managerial position, you'd most likely be just doing what you do now until an opportunity like this comes along).

Take the job. Your increased salary will help pay for school. Don't be a fool, stay in school (or rather, enroll in school fool)

Thanks. I do intend to go back to school in the longer run for sure!! Mathematics, physics and computing science have been my longer term interests and strong suit academically. That and astronomy 😉

Are you Indian? Do you wear a turban? (I think both are required of 7-11 managers) 😀

Being a manager of a 7-11, while perhaps not an ideal long-term goal, wouldn't look bad on a resume down the road.

Why does stress get to you so much? That shit will kill you, ya know...
(personally, I've never understood why people let stress get them...even though it's kicked my ass a couple of times without me realizing it)

Maybe you take too much of a load when you go to school. Nothing wrong with 2 or 3 or 4 classes per semester...in most environments, 12 units is considered full-time as far as financial aid is concerned. So it takes an extra year or two...that's better than overloading yourself and setting yourself up for failure.

If overload is the cause of your stress at school, how are you going to manage the7-11 and take night classes too? That would add a LOT of stress to your life.

Someone already asked, but I don't remember seeing an answer...
Are you getting professional help for your stress management/emotional problems? It sounds like you should.

All I read was the OP;
Sounds like your problems are school related as you suck there but not at work.
What has changed in you life that leads you to believe that you will be successful at school this time?
Sounds like you need to deal with that issue before going back to school.

I would seriously consider taking the job. If you enjoy working there, the stress doesn't get to you as bad, or you are better able to cope with it, then what really is the problem working at 7-11? It will look good on a resume down the line.

$42K isn't much, but if you keep living at home and saving money (and are even more disciplined) you'll be able to either go back to school on your savings one day and come out debt free OR take the cash and buy a small home. Either way, at some point you will probably want to move out of your parent's place.

The world needs people to manage 7-11. Nice thing is that you can transfer those skills to manage the local Quik-Trip, Gas-N-Go, Raceway, etc. I'm only half joking here, too... You could move anywhere in the country and manage a convenience store, so that definitely offers some flexibility in your life. Heck, if you get your emontional problems under control, you could move wherever you wanted to go to school and still work part time.

Something to consider is doing the manager thing for awhile (maybe a year or two) then going back to school part time (think one or two classes a semester) while working part time. Maybe that would help you balance the stress of being in school full time.

I had a friend in high school that was a bit of a screw up. Smart guy, just made really dumb, impulsive choices. He ended up working part time at a shoe store while going to school, then made a career out of it. He is now representing that shoe store on a team opening up the market in China. Ultimately he was very successful. Who knows, you could be promoted into the corporate structure of 7-11. I'm sure you are a bright person, and if they recognize that, then they will recognize the value you bring by working your way up through the retail business.

Best of luck to you.

this.

you could sched yourself just for day shifts and goto nite school. or vice versa.

or

screw school. become district mgr, then jump ship to someone w/deeper pockets like Burger King

If you cannot do both(i,e night courses), then I would not do 7/11. With education, your potential can go much higher. Given your post, sounds like you have good management experience, so this can play very well once you get your education.

..fishoil caps have a prozac effect with none of the serious side effects of SSRI's. you need fishoil.
