I thinking of switching over to cable. I currently have DSL via Pacbell in LA area. Anyone currently using cable via time warner's road runner service? Is it good? How is the newsgroup completion rate? Pacbell's news server is BAD.

Thanks for any feedback.

It depends. Don't just ask about your specific city either. It's more of an area type thing. In my city, the area i live in has slowed down dramatically to around 140kbs, but a mile away from my area, people get around 600 kbs of bandwidth! this is all in the same city. The best thing to do is check with people around your area. Service wise, RR is very good. I only had one network outage in 2 years. The only thing I hate about RR is their pop3 servers. They have a tendecy to go out very often.

If they give you a free month and install definitely try it. Keep your DSL and use cable for a month, if you like it keep in for another month or two and then cancel your DSL. I use @home and am happy with the connection and usenet but the e-mail sucks, people tell me it bounces sending to me and there's no way to know what I haven't received. I figure another $2.50 a month for a solid e-mail box ain't bad especially considering my 3000/128 connection.

Thanks for the quick responses. Can you run the cable modem through a router? Right now I have my DSL modem connected to a Netgear 314 router(got this because of the hot deals forum) and share the DSL connect with 3 computer in the house.

Thanks.

I'm on Time Warner Road Runner in NC. I had huge problems with download speeds, but the problem turned out to be the cable line from the neighborhood box to my house. They yanked out the old line, but still have to bury the new one. Problem solved. Connection consitantly at 2mb. Fast.
