Thinking of returning a 27 inch monitor

So today I got a 27 inch monitor to replace my old dell 19 inch.

IT is a samsung P2770H and man I gotta tell you it is big. I sit like 5 feet away from it and it kinda hurts my eyes. I even tone down the brightness and it got better.

I was wondering how far do you guys sit from your 26+ inch monitor and does it take a while for your eyes to get adjusted?

27 inches is not all that big especially for a 16:9 monitor. and I dont think you sit anywhere near 5 feet away from your monitor. if i pushed my monitor all the way to the back of the desk I still could not reach my keyboard if I was even 4 feet way. a typical bedroom is only like 10x10 or 12x12 so do you actually sit halfway across the room?

3.5'~4' is the comfortable distant for me with my 28" monitor.

I dont think you guys realize how far even 4 feet away is. a desk is usually only just over 2 feet deep edge to edge and your keyboard is going to be on your desk I assume.

heck here is a pic with my monitor pushed all the way back and me measuring 4 feet from it. I am about 9 inches from even reaching the edge of the desk much less the keyboard on the desk.





lol, at 5 feet I can barely even read the text on most pages.

I sit about 4' from a 37" monitor. It took a couple days to get used to.

I have the exact same monitor and just happened to have a measuring tape right next to me. My eyes are 2.5 feet from the monitor and I love it to pieces. Any bigger and I'd have to constantly move my eyes around to take everything in.

Maybe it's just the visual shock going from a 19" panel to a 27" Billboard. On a 19" monitor a single web page in full screen is normal. A full screen google page on a 27" can be blinding. So, it's natural to back a few feet away from the retinal bombardment.

Turning down the default brightness can help and as well as never running the browser full screen. However, 27" of TN is 7" more TN than anyone should have to endure.

That's natural give it a week or so you'll get used to it eventually.

I've got a 27.5 inch monitor-I'd recommend you sit back at least 50 feet, ideally in an adjoining room to avoid eye strain.

27" iMac i7, Dell 2709W..... I sit probably less than two feet away (8hrs/day, 5days/week). No eyestrain.

The 2709W is 1920x1200.. but the iMac is the newer 2560x1440.. The Dell will bother me a little bit nearing the end of the day, but that's not because of the monitor, its just because I can't stand that its still the lower resolution.

Can you actually read from your monitor from 4' away? I doubt it! Most likely you are 1.5,2' away from it.

To answer the op, I too had problems adjusting from my old 1280x1024 to 1680x1050, but it took less than two days to settle for the wide screen and now I couldn't go back, not for gaming anyway.

I know the feeling. I also went from a Dell 19" to a 27", Planar though. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but you will adjust. Took me about a week, but I love it now. I just wish 27" 2560x1440 wasn't so expensive. I'm hoping Hazro can shake up the market a bit. If they can actually offer decent panels for a good price, I'll be happy.

About 3' from my 24" - I still find text a bit small; I override Explorer's text sizes.

A 27" would be perfect for a 3' to 3.5' viewing distance.

I am planning on switching from the student-like arrangement of sitting in a computer chair at desk 2' from 22" screen to a more living room arrangement of sitting on couch with wireless keyboard/mouse ~8 feet from ~40 inch screen.

It comes down to individual and their eyes. To some, 27" 2' away isn't bad...to some it is.

PS. I was looking at the same monitor at Costco ($280)....man, I swear I had that thing on the cart....and put it back.

Some of these manufacturers set the default of the brightness at 100% so thats what it is when you unbox it. You are expected to set the monitor settings to your liking aster you set it up. Everyone has different preferences and tolerances so don't expect a LCD to be set perfectly upon set up. Play around with the settings and see whats best for you. I sit about 3 feet away from mine. Maybe a bit less.

Ah that's just the acclimatisation - I even got that when changing from a 22" to a 24" (which I think is pretty much the smallest size you can upgrade ) At first glance they're just huuge, but you get used to it quite quickly.

I'd give it a few days, although adjusting contrast/brightness accordingly is a good idea in either case.
