I'm thinking about moving from Chicago to Seattle for a new job. Does anyone have any idea about a cost of living comparison between the two cities? If I get this job, I'd be making about as much/slightly more than I'm making now.

depends where you live in seattle....city would be expensive....no more than chicago though. Seattle is a great city and only 2 hours drive from the greatest city in the world....Vancouver!

Are you looking at an apartment or a house? Rent or own? Do you have a family?

I can get a 2-bedroom apartment for ~1000 or so.

I imagine I would eventually want to buy a house, but I'm sure I'll have to rent for a while. If I go, my GF and her 2 kids would be coming along too. It would be great to be near Vancouver, home of the finest NHL tema in the league (haveta say that, my Bro-in-Law works for them, but lives in Chicago).

So at least a 2 bedroom apt.. well, in the U District you're probably looking at least $900 a month for a 2 bedroom; if you live further out, maybe in South King County (Not Kent, OH NOES!) you could make out much nicer in terms of price.

I'm really surprised that more Seattle AT'ers haven't chimed in with their advice.

There's at least 20 AT'ers who hail from Seattle - kingdome of Starbucks.

Seattle is great. If it wasn't for the traffic and 9 months of rain. But, I've managed for many many years.

I wouldn't think you'd notice a large cost of living increase, but I've never lived in Chicago. I would suspect you would just want to visit the Emerald City for a few days and see what you think.

The standard refrain from the locals to discourage migration to the city:

"It rains all the time, housing's expensive, traffic is awful."

And its all true but I wouldnt dream of living anywhere else.

There must be something in the Seattle water because there are a lot of women with BIG BUTTS.

No sun = no reason to show one's skin = reasons to bundle up = weight gain

IMO, of course.

There are plenty of fine women here, though, trust me. Just not as many as SoCal. :(

Seattle is a cesspool. It's the ugliest city I've ever seen. Keep in mind I live in Vancouver, BC. They are very similar cities except Seattle has a much bigger extreme. It's either really dirty, or really clean. So, as a result, you either live in a pisshole, or you have to be really rich and live in a REALLY nice place.

I thought about it a few years ago.

The cloudiness/dreariness and the outrageous housing prices (Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, etc.) kept me here.

I've never been to Seattle, but as a Chicagoan I feel I have to step up for my city.

Chicago is a worldclass city because of all the great neighborhoods and tons of things to do in them. I don't know if Seattle can compare, it only has 3.7 million in the metropolitan area while Chicago has 9.5 million. Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, all great places to hang out with a good scene for partying, shopping. We've got a great restaurant scene, one I'm sure is betters than Seattle's. There are nice cultural opportunities here because we have 2 worldclass universities (Northwestern, U Chicago) and a good set of museums and good theater.

It matters what you like, if your idea of a good time is just hanging out at home, then you could probably live in Smalltown USA. Seattle isn't a huge downgrade from Chicago and I'm sure Seattle would be a great place to live. I hear the pacific northwest is nice, mountains beat corn.

If money is what matters then Seattle should be cheaper. Check out CNN cost of living calculator. Normally I'd push harder for Chicago, but I don't think it's that much of a downgrade to move there. One thing I like about Chicago is by living here I don't need a car, saves me a lot of money.

I'm from Seattle but I've been living in SoCal for 4 years now for school. All's I can say is amen brother. I thought that there would be tons of hot ownmen down here. It dosen't even compare to the Northwest. Portland and Seattle are the best. I can't wait until I move back in June.

I'm not down on Chicago. Believe me, I've lived here my entire life (40 years). It's just a question of economics. There's the possibility of a job offer in Seattle. Since my contract at my current place of employment is up at the end of this month, I have to give this serious consideration.

I lived there for about 10 years (through most of the 90's). Depending on where your job is located, try to live outside of the actual city.

The weather did finally get to me. very short summers.

Love the culture there though. The people are great. and there is always something to do.

According to one of those salary equivalence websites, I'd need a 60% raise to break even. Ouch. Apparently, housing is the main problem, and suddenly, the great salary is not so great anymore. I'm still investigating further. It's hard to have an idea about housing without being at the place, not knowing the neighborhoods, etc... I must have a house, my stuff would never fit in an apartment.
