thinking of joining CHP, anyone here CHP??

I am thinking CHP make around 60,000 a year starting. Maybe a little less or more. This is how much someone I know started out at a police department in California. CHP is probably similar.

LAPD on their webiste says starting officers make 50K, but didn't say on CHP website. i think being CHP i have less of chance of being shot then LAPD, lolz

Yeah, CHP doesn't seem to face nearly as many risks as "real" police do. Do their work extend outside of traffic stops?

CHP does protection for govenor, traffic stops, state investigations, state level inspections. Remeber CHP has state jurdisction.. unlike LAPD which has LA city jurdisction, and the sherrif which has the county.

The CHP doesnt just do traffic stops.

Get a four year degree... any degree. You'll be a Captain in five (5) years and make 100K easy.

Yup and when you retire at 50 you will earn over 100,000 a year from the state, doing nothing.

Just so you know - it is not easy to get into the CHP right now. My friend has been trying for like 5 years and just finally got into the academy.

sweet i have a 4 year bachelors in psychology from UCI. why is it so hard to get into the academy?? its academically very hard, or pyshically?

My brother just recently became a CHP officer. The academy he went to had about 40% of the people drop out by the end. It's pretty tough stuff...like a boot camp pretty much. PM me with a few questions if you want and I can forward them to him.

From what i know, its hard to get in mainly because there aren't a lot of positions at the moment. With the current budget situation in california, they haven't really been expanding like they probably should with law enforcement. My brother had a pretty good background compared to most and it still took about 2 years of processing, interviews, screenings, etc before he even went to the academy.

I heard the mental evaluation to get in is pretty intense. Multiple interviews using a lie detector with some guy who looks like he would shoot your mom in the head if he caught her stealing a pack of gum. My friend tried to get in but they denied him because they thought he was potentially unstable because his father killed himself when he was like 5 years old. Go figure how that would effect his performance. But yeah its not like signing up to be a deputy in your local police.
