Thanks for all the responses guys.

First, I am not overclocking at all. Default FSB, voltage, everything

Are you sure the Athlon XP can handle up to 60-70C without crashing? I have gotten some screen lock ups in video games and I thought it was directly related to the CPU overheating and freezing.

I currently use this heatsink, with a MUCH quiter fan (The one that comes with it sounds like a jet liner taking off). I got it because everyone claimed it was a really good for cooling XPs.

I have previous experiences overclocking (CeleronA 300@450, 366@550, and Coppermine 700 @ 933) so I'm very comfortable about overclocking.

Whats the success rate 1.6A @ 2.4 or 1.8A @ 2.4? I would really like to hit 2.4ghz, and 1.8A seems like the best bet without overclocking the FSB, but I think I would have to have a little luck to get a 1.8 that could reach that speed....

A regular XP 1900+ non overclocked does not radiate much less heat then an overclocked Northwood (Depends on how far you get on the overclocking, however), so it's not fair to say an Athlon system will be inherently loud. It depends entirely on the quality of the HSF, and an AX-7 with a 80mm Vantec Stealth would be just as quiet as anything else.

45C idle vs 35C idle is what I usually see with Athlons Non-O\C vs P4s O\Cs, plus its a pretty known fact that Athlons are much hotter then P4s.

Aggressor,

My 1.4 T-Bird regularly runs at 66C-68C and I've never had a problem with it locking up or crashing. If you wanted I'm sure you could give up your loud fan for a quieter one, even if you sacrificed some cooling. Atleast it'd be alot cheaper to try this first.

I can almost guarantee that the crashes in games are due either to bugs in the game itself or drivers (chipset, video, etc) and not due to the CPU overheating. (If you overclock your video card that could also be a cause of the crashes).

Yes, I am quite sure that the AthlonXP will handle up to 70 degrees celcius without a problem. AMD themselves guarantee that it will. Check their technical documentation for the processor out at their website.

The same thing applies for the retail heatsink/fan unit. AMD sells it with the CPU and warrants the package for 3 years, so it must be capable of doing its job (and in my experience it is, quietly).

if you overclocking to 2.4 and using retail HSF.........your gonna see 50-55c temps my friend.:D 1.8@2.3GHZ @ 50c, 61c max.

I run a 1.6A @ 2.4 1.65 Vcore with stock HS/Fan and ASII. Idle is ~ 38c, load ~ 53 - 55C. Newer 1.6A's seem to be able to get to that speed with little or no Vcore increase. That would lower temps a few notches.

Thermalright AX-7 and a good 80mm fan...

...all you'll ever need for a quiet and cool running AMD system.

OK, before I jump over to Intel, whats a good heatsink and fan (QUIET ONE!) that will fit on an Epox 8HKA+ without any mods?

I'm running the same board as you with an AX-7 and an adjustable fan. My temps are in the low to upper 30's. If you bias for the socket thermistor I'm peaking around 43-44C with the fan set in the middle of its RPM range.

If you were buying a new rig I'd recommend the P4 1.6. Even overclocked to the hilt it runs pretty cool. You've still got a ton of life in your present computer though so $38+shipping should silence that beast.

aggressor - first off i was running a 1900+ with the retail HSF for around 6 months b4 temps starting reaching 70 or so underload and then the only time she would crash was in morrowind which puts a huge demand on the CPU... that one ended up frying about 3 weeks ago (most likely my fault) and killed my MB, also a Epox 8kha+..... fast forward till now and i'm running a XP 2000+ on a new 8kha+ board with this HSF and the hottest temp i've got so far is 56 C, so i'm sure u could get lower on a 1900+ and its quite enough for me.... i have 4 fans, one intake,3 exhaust and on the on the HS... all pretty much generic minus the HSF which is the clear with blue LED... i get just a low sound that i like..helps me sleep :D but u can choose from a lsit of fans for that HSF and get a quite one if u wish... hope this helps some...

Just found a review for my current, loud as hell fan:

The fan is an Cooler Master 60 mm, model # A6025-68BB-3AN-P1, dual ball bearings rated at 36 cfm, 6800 rpm - basically a Delta 38 clone. I measured fan noise 8" from the fan intake with a Radio Shack sound meter - 69 dBA - about the same as a Delta 38.

Jeez. Going to go with the ThermalRight AX-7, with the adjustable fan that does 3000 RPM with 39.8 CFM @ 32.6 dBA. Thanks for the help guys, hopefully this will make my PC as quiet as it is now with a lower quality fan.

I have a T-bird 1.2, with an AX-7 heatsink and an 80mm fan. One intake, one exhaust in my case, and my vid card fan - and you can barely hear my computer if you're ~5 feet away.

That's nice. I can barely hear my system from 5 centimetres away. The fan on my videocard was drowning out the rest of the system!!!! That's with antec smart fans of course. I really did love the post that AMD fanboy made "How do you make a link to a website?" Yes, obviously some great insigts on computers that one must have...

my dell at work is inaudible (northwood 2.0)

My computer is the QUIETEST.. so :p

No seriously, when did this thread turn into a "mine is better than yours" crap thread?
Dude, 55 ain't a bad temp, but I understand that you want quiet and I think that a 1.6 will be really quiet, or just stick a quiet 80mm fan on that heatsink of yours .. either way you could drop your noise level down .. maybe not as quiet as 7757524 though, but I don't think any of us are worthy.

Heh heh. No one is worthy :) Actually my northy system isn't as quiet as my athlon one. Of course, my athlon system is an ANTEC SX1030B coated with two layers of noise reducing foam all the way through so as to make it air tight except two holes. One of those holes is the exhaust in the whisper power supply and the other is a duct which runs from outside the case onto (and is airtight with) a 1600rpm 80mm fan attached to the heatsink. The hard drives are completley mounted on foam and can't be heard from outside. It's totally silent. That took a lot of effort though. I'm a nut for noisy PCs I can't deny that.

Went and ordered the Thermalright AX-7 Heatsink and Enermax adjustable fan with some Arctic Silver III Grease. Hopefully this will help :)

Can't go wrong with Thermalright :D

It should help you out a lot, on both temps and noise, good luck. Hope you can get below 50 at least.
