Thinking of Getting iPhone 3GS...jb/unlock status?

Hi guys I'm thinking of getting an iphone 3gs. Does anyone know what the current status of the jb and unlock and what what it would reasonably in the near future? Thanks.

it'll come with either 4.0.2 or 4.1, both which cant be jailbroken right now unfortunately. soon, there will be a jailbreak for 4.1, but who knows about the status for the unlock, since the baseband will be updated..

Check the version in the Settings App. If it's 4.0.1 or below you should be good for both JB and unlock.

i just sold a 4.0.1 3GS unlocked for $300 cash. easy to unlock the 4.0.1 - you just run cydia and ultrasn0w install - done.

now make sure you buy a phone with 4.0.1 SHSH blobs on file somewhere or you'll be sad if you nuke the phone - which i've never seen ever (2g,3g,3gs,4g,ipad,ipod4) - but have heard people do somehow. probably installing pr0n apps or something.

I thought the common thought was the next fw was close enough around the corner that the dev team wasn't going to release a jb until the next fw?

Means buy from someone who has already jailborken. When you jailbrake a unique signature gets uploaded to cydia, that allows you to down grade your firmware.

But you can also buy from someone that never updated the firmware.

That's not totally true... people who jailbreak don't automatically get their blobs uploaded to Cydia. You have to go into Cydia and TELL IT to upload. It's easy, but it's also not automatic. In short: just because it was jailbroken before doesn't mean they remembered to save their blobs.

It's best to just find one that was never updated past 4.0.1. That way you're guaranteed to not have any issues.

Unless you know that the person had previously jailbroken the phone, AND stored their blobs through cydia, you won't be able to jailbreak/unlock the phone at this time. You should be able to relatively shortly, but at this time there is no jailbreak for anything past 4.0.1 and you can't downgrade unless your blobs were stored through cydia.
