Have no clue what to get, dont want to spend more then $150 hope yawl can point me in the right direction.

Oh we live across the street from a park with all kinds of cool areas for driving. My boy is 6yo by the way.

the car needs to be able to go on grass and mud and sand.

Little help please...

Traxxas Rustler.

Easy to fix. Easy to drive. Any decent hobby store will have spare parts. He will enjoy it and you can upgrade to brushless/LiPo when you are both ready for a speed and power boost.

Take it easy on the mud. If you want more offroad, you can look into a Traxxas Stampede. It's a "truck" version of the Rustler.

http://traxxas.com/products/models/electric/3605stampede (now waterproof it seems)

Stick with electric if extreme newbies. You can look into nitro versions later and learn to tune them. For a no headache and "go-out-and-play-right-now", stick with the NiMh/brushed setup.

Hit me up if you have any questions. Been doing these for years and have a garage full of electric and nitro stuff.

Other companies are Kyosho, OFNA, Tamiya...

Second. Rustler/Bandit/Stampede are largely the same car with different shape shells.

If you can find an old Bandit cheap on eBay, the frame hasn't changed. It's a good lesson on building and repairing and you'll save some money and get the parts you want.

I got a Bandit for 50 off eBay recently and upgraded it to XL-5 for another 30.

Stick with electric. Once your nitro car won't start, it will sit in your garage for eternity until you sell it at a garage sale 10 years from now.

I used to race Losi buggies and truck when I was in high school/college, so I am partial to them.

Look up Losi RTR vehicles. (buggies, stadium trucks, rock crawlers, etc)
Youtube has TONS of videos for any RC car. Check those for reviews and videos of actual speeds, etc.

I would start off with the Traxxas stuff also. For $150, you can get some nice cars. They're not as expensive compared to when we were kids.

Btw, it's "... my boy and me." Your teachers probably hammered into your head that using "<person> and me" is wrong 100% of the time.

Use " <person> and I" in the subject
My dad and I love fishing = My dad loves fishing. I love fishing. (correct)
My dad and me love fishing = My dad loves fishing. Me love fishing. (incorrect)

Use " <person> and me" in the object
This is a picture of my wife and me = This is a picture of my wife. This is a picture of me. (correct)

I was unaware of this, and my grammar is usually impeccable. I dont think I'll be able to break that habit though.

Partial to Losi myself. 🙂

To the OP, I recommend as others have, to go with Traxxas. If you were looking to do more with the hobby than just having some fun, I'd recommend other brands, but Traxxas is easy for the beginner/just-want-fun kind of person. Local hobby shops are sure to carry replacement parts when you inevitably break something. Electric is better than nitro as well for your needs. I prefer Nitro myself but I doubt you want to bother tuning and trying to keep your engine running while your son just sits and tells you to hurry up. 🙂

Either a Traxxas RTR or Tamiya. Would not recommend anything else for a first timer. Also, choose based on parts availability locally. Sucks having to wait for parts to be shipped. Also, be aware that these cars need maintenance just like full size cars as far as cleaning out the drivetrain, oiling bearings, etc.

And never ever use 'myself' in any of these cases.

Duratrax......any thoughts?
My son turns 8 this month. I can get a Duratrax for $120, RTR. I want better than the toy stuff at the Megalowmarts. But I also don't want to spend $220+ and have it collect dust after a month.
