Thinking of getting a motorcycle

Something along the lines of a Honda cbr-600, Yamaha YZF-600 or Suzuki GSX-R 600. Basicly any kind of sport bike in the 600cc range.

Can anyone suggest some places to look for a bike in the Chicago area?

Thanks

Hey, I'm thinking of a bike too (darn gas prices). I was thinking of the Kawasaki Ninja 250 for <$2000. Sporty and has good reviews.

Really? Who?

Ninja 250 or 500, or Suzuki gs500 are all good starter bikes. They can all be had for decent prices, as well.

As far as the 600's mentioned...I'm partial to Suzuki myself, but that's just me. All of the major manufacturers (Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Honda) are so close in performance nowadays that it's really just a matter of personal preference/style. If I were buying one, I'd get either a Gixxer or ZX6R, but the stock underseat exhaust on the CBR does look nice.

Wow, that really sux, I'm sorry to hear that. I realize that motorcycles can be dangerous, and that it can happen at any time, but I still have faith in that I could ride it safely.

Even though there is no helmet law in Chicago, I'd of course wear one.

So I take it no one has leads as to where I could get a decent used bike?

Thanks

You say you want a 600cc sport bike. Tell me you already have a license and experience.

the 'busa and gsxr 1000 are great starter bikes. I'd also look at the new ZX-12 as well.

On a serious note, search for "motorcycle" in current and the archived posts. Lots of great advice in there.

I always thought good starter bikes should be lower CC bikes?

Just remember, ALWAYS wear your helmet and leathers when you ride. Just the helmet won't cut it. Drive as if you are 100% invisible, just because the car next to you looks you straight in the eye one moment doesn't mean they won't merge into your lane while you occupy it the next. And take an MSF class before you start seriously riding.

Make sure you watch one of those "motorcycle darwinism" video clips... That'll give you some good perspective.

Small bike. Cheap bike. You will dump it. MSF course. LEATHER. GOOD HELMET. Cars do not see you and in the event they do they're out to kill you. This is the mentality you should ride with.

That should cover it.

nah man the low CC bikes are very light, you want a busa or anything over a liter because their weight makes em less agile... NOT

If you never ridden, i would start with the ninjas just to be safe. I'll be getting a 600cc sport bike mid july (probably high mile CBR or similar) and i won't touch anything over 600cc. I've been riding since i was 11, but i never had any *real* bike and i havent ridden one in 4 years (im 20).

As for safety stuff, leather (especially with kevlar), high boots, helmet and headlight modulators is what i would get. Vast majority of accidents happen because cars just dont see you. If you get a headlight modulator or HID kit, people are more likely to see you

Any of the 600cc supersports are not good first time bikes.

Get a Ninja 250, a GS500, Ninja 500, Buell Blast, Nighthawk 250, Any of the 250cc cruisers, Kawasaki LTD 500 / Vulcan 500.

Stay away from the SV650 (wheelie machine - not for a beginner) and any of the 600cc. Also stay away from teh FZ6 and the 599.

A 500cc is enough to kill you too. I mean there is a guy on GSTwin who crashed on the on ramp to teh freeway... new rider.. and he crashed.

SO techincally its possible to crash in anything.. but a lower powered bike infuses confidence that more powerful bikes cant.

I have had my GS500 for 3 years and i plan to keep it longer!

I am sorry I sold my old Honda.

I had a 1971 CB750. 5 speed with disc brake front and drum rear. 4 carbs on an inline 4 with a 4 into 1 header. That was one nice heavy bike. Great on the highway.

My first bike was a Honda 150. Yup, small and slow, but perfect for learning on.

they're being sarcastic... new riders and liter bikes are accidents waiting to happen. i know a couple of people who got their license and went straight for liter bikes... no accidents so far but you can tell they're afraid of their bikes and they don't know how to ride it... not to mention the chicken strips...

anyone interested in getting a bike should read the advice in this thread... i doubt it will really change the mind of someone who is set to get what they really want like a brand spanking new gixxer 1000 but hey its their money. :)

It would totally depend.

I think a salvage title on a bike is much less worrying than on a car.
