Thinking of driving down to Virginia Beach...

Hey guys!

Trying to plan for a 4-5 day trip to virginia beach from northern NJ.

Never took a road trip before so I really need some help here.

I would like to stop in Washington for a day and go sight seing, then continue across.

Points of interest?
So far I have
Luray Caverns
Bush Gardens
Shenandoah Park
chesapeake bay bridge
Virginia Aquarium
Virginia Beach

Can anyone suggest a route, maybe a best way to drive from place to place or suggest a site that can help me plan for this???

Very vague @ this point, but really want to get out there and experience a bit of what the US has to offer!

I'm looking forward to all ideas!

The only place I remember by name is Peabodies, and only cuz I got laid there on my 21st.

Dont even know if they are still around.

drive straight through VA Beach and head to the real beaches in NC.

also, VA is a nazi terrorist state when it comes to highway patrol and their speeding policy.

But do stop in Bush Gardens, Williamsburg. It is a very happy place.

I'm from the same area as you and have done most of the things on your list but on separate trips. Shenandoah park and the Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline drive are amazing in general but aren't really on the way if you plan on hitting DC. If you want a scenic drive you could skip DC and take 78 to 81. If you decide to do both, plan on killing at least a full day driving to and through Shenandoah. Feel free to PM with any questions.

Virginia Beach is very crowded in the summer. I hear there is a"local" beach just further south of the main drag.. maybe 5 or 10 miles? just as nice from what I heard without the crowds.

Colonial Williamsburg is neat.
And yeah, Peabody's for clubbing.

Use Google Maps. You'll probably want to take 295 to 1 to 13, from the looks of it. That'l take you across the Bay Bridge. Connect to 10 (264 now I think) and you're at the beach.

Williamsburg is about an hour away up 64.

Specifically to the Shenandoah Park/Luray Caverns part you will want to take I 66 west from DC to Front Royal Virginia. From there get on the Skyline Drive and head south enjoying the frequent overlooks and gorgeous views. When you get to Thoroughfare Gap you will want to take Route 211 West to Luray Caverns. When finished there if you have time for some more leisurely driving head east again to the Skyline Drive and head south on it until you get to to the southern end of the park. Keep heading south and you will hit I 64 which you can take East to Richmond and Virginia Beach.

As for the Nazi crap, Virginia for a brief period of time had these ridiculous repeat offender fines they came up with that have all been removed. Other than certain clearly identified special enforcement zones in high traffic corridors and construction zones where the fines are elevated the traffic laws here are no different than anywhere else. Example I received a speeding ticket on I 95 outside Emporia Virginia back in November for 77 in a 65 and the total cost was around $135.00.

If you do 80 or above, it is reckless driving no matter what. Which is about the equivalent to a dui. Watch out, especially in Hopewell for cops. Also, peabody's is still there, its about two blocks away from the beach.

I have received tickets for both 20 over and for going 82 and none of them were charged as reckless. It is up to the cop which way he wants to charge it.

they got rid of the civil remediation fees, or whatever they were called, but its still a police state. drive carefully.

Emporia = Speed trap. It's even worse on 64 or whatever highway that is that goes through there. My wife has had ONE ticket in her entire life and it was in that POS town. Stupid cop got her for 62 in a 55 and wrote the ticket anyway. Her aunt, who works in the VA DMV, admitted that they are notorious in Emporia for their revenue generation tickets. If you go anywhere near there slow down.

Also, Chesapeake Bay bridge is cool and all, for about 5 minutes. Then it just gets boring. It's a huge slab of concrete on the water, and it costs a few bucks (I forget) to drive across.

Busch Gardens is a fun place though. And I believe the beach others are discussing is Sandbridge. Nice place.

Thanks for all the information guys...Got to process all of this and then I'm sure I'll have a few more questions 🙂

Thanks again!
