You can can get your credit score for free if you don't mind a hassle or two to save a few bucks.

1) Go here

2) In the middle left click the "30-Day FREE Credit Watch Trial" which gives you free unlimited access to the following EquiFax (one of the 3 big credit bureau's in the U.S.A.) credit services:
E-mail notification within 24 hours of changes posted to
your credit report
Unlimited access to Score Power? - your Equifax credit
report and FICO® credit score
Online history of all notifications and reports by date
Ability to dispute inaccurate information in your report
online
A toll-free dedicated customer service hotline

3) If you cancel your membership within 30 days you are charged $0 but if you forget you will be charged their outrageous $69.95 per year annual fee. To protect yourself I would cancel by calling them (write down the date/time/who you spoke with) and sending them a follow-up e-mail as well.

Enroll in this service and you can see your credit report and credit score for free, I just signed up and plan on cancelling in about 3 weeks after I use all their services.

I'm also 19, and have a student card with Capital One. Yes, it has a high interest rate (19.8%), but there's no annual fee. I've got a $500 limit on the card. I can pay my bill online (once every 24 hours, if I wish), and so far am satisfied with it. It's the first (and only) credit card I've applied for, and was approved without any problems. Capital One should let you know immediately whether or not you're approved for the card. It was probably just the time of day (around 2am) I applied, but I had to wait to get something in the mail from them that told me I was approved.

Hmmm... I usually don't bump dead threads (who does?) but is there any truth to this statement? (Is it really that bad? I am sure other companies do the same...)
