In your budget I would look in the want ads for an Ovation or Alvarez. The really good acoustics start at about twice your budget in my experience..

Definitely not online. PawnShops and B&M's completely. Why? Because, unlike a GeForce Ultra which you KNOW will run at 879234 fps at 2048x1600 resolution, you DON'T know what a guitar sounds like, regardless of what other people say. Guitar is all about feel. Go to a guitar store and try out ALL guitars w/in your price range and see which fits/feels/sounds the best to YOU.

You actually could go online, but only after you knew exactly what kind of guitar you wanted. For your price range I'd look at Washburn guitars, I think they're a great value. Buying a used guitar is another option if you can find one in good condition. I think Yamaha guitars are also decent, but make sure you shop around, you'll find a lot of variation in prices between shops. A lot of B&M shops mark their prices way up and wont give you a good deal unless you have some kind of relationship with them. Just be patient, I'm sure you'll find a good guitar for that price range.

Definately check around all the local "New & Used" outlets you can find - and have the cash on hand to leverage a deal if you need to.

While you can find good deals in pawn shops, keep in mind that they usually know exactly what they have and what it's worth.

Regardless, take the time to play any likely candidates for a while, and don't be put off by poor appearances.

I got a D-12 Washburn that looks, plays, and sounds beautiful for $100 from a guy that "needed the money".

Do you americans have Norman guitars? They are a very good maker just aways down the road here in Quebec and they make excellent guitars..good action and sound. I bought a 12 strings years ago and it still plays and sounds good...it wasn't one of these 12 strings that you have to tune every 20 mins either....they recently started making an Ovation style too. Or if you can, I would look around for an older Martin or Gibson Hummingbird.....they have a great sound but are rare and hard to find used...sometimes, it's better to hang on and save a little more to get better equipment than to buy cheap and then end up buying better later....you save the price of the cheap one .

I don't play, but my wife likes to "noodle" a bit. I got her a used G Series from Takamine for close to $300.00. It was in mint condition and the sound says it all.

Take someone that knows guitars with you to help find a quality used guitar. If you take care of it, you could get most of your money back for it on a trade later.
