a friend of mine is selling a 97 VW jetta glx vr6 for 6,000 US. he says it's a two door but i know that the jetta doest come in a two door model so im thinking it's a GTI VR6 either way it's a good deal my only problem is that i dont know too much about them. do you guys know how they are as far as performance and mods as well as longevity?

oh ya it's only got 30,000 miles on it too.:)

I've got a 98 Jetta GLX and I love it. I haven't had to do any major work on it yet. It has 39,000 miles on it. VW's are good cars but I here they can be pricey to fix. You are right about the 2 and 4 door thing. Jettas are only 4 doors were golfs are 2 and 4. Having the V6 is really awesome. Its not the fastest car in the world, but it goes when it has to. I got mine up to 135mph on the highway with 4 people in the car.

I used to own a 1985 VW Rabbit GTI, with regular "checkups", and a little TLC, I got 450,000 miles out of that car.

Good reliable cars, excellent, and dependable. I say go for it.

The VR6 is a very reliable engine. You have to make sure you take care of it or it will get expensive. As far as performance mods you can do quite a bit to them. A friend of mine owns a VW tuning shop and has done turbos, superchargers and nitrous kits on them. I have seen some real bad ass VWs come out of there. Some of his cars have been in European Car magazine. His website is Eurotech Racing. The site is nowhere near as good as his work, dead links, but you can see some of his work. The car on the entry page was one of the first VR6 Cabrio conversions done in the country.

Assuming your friend didn't steal it and there is nothing insanely wrong with it (like it was totalled) BUY THIS CAR If somebody offered me a VW VR6 (jetta or GTI) with that many miles and a '97 for that price I'd be all over it like a fat kid on a smarty.

He must have paid about $20k for it, why he selling it so cheap? You could get $10k+ EASY for that thing.

The LIdless Eye,

That's bratwursted up. Those are extreme examples he does all levels of tuning.

Viper22,

That car has a V6 not a VR6. The VR6 is a narrow angle vee(15 degree) and has only one head.

I have an 87 Scirocco 8V and I love it. The 84 GTI I had before was a great car too and I miss it. You should jump on that deal. VW might start importing a Jetta wagon w/a TDI engine. That sounds like a sweet ride.
