i do a lot of encoding so i was thinking of getting an intel setup. i'm gonna go with a 2.4C and hopefully OC it to a 3.0+
right now i'm running a 1700+ @ 2200 mhz. it takes me about 60 minutes to encode a 4 GB dvd. how much faster will a 2.4C@3.0 Ghz be @ 1000 mhz fsb assuming evevrything in the rig stay the same (see sig)? it is worth the upgrade?

Edit: just encoded 4.4 GB in 67 minutes with a 1700+@ 2100 mhz. just tryin different processor speeds to see how much of a difference it makes

TOTAL guess and off the top off my head but i would say in the range of 25 %...

From what i remember on Anandtech and THG you could probably not 10-15 minutes off that with a P4.

But, is that 15 minutes worth the money it is going to set you back?

well, i would sell my mobo and chip for the ~$150, so i would only be spending $125 or so.

bump for more responses

I believe in THG's tests... the fastest P4's could encode about 100 frames per second, and the fastest AthlonXP's were doing about 65... so, about 50% faster.

I can't find the one I was talking about... but here's one that shows the performance pretty well...

link

*EDIT* On a side note, what type of conversion are you doing? It took me about 2 hours to do a 2 pass divx encode on a 2 hours movie.

Sorry to change the subject...

Shady, PUSH THAT DAMN CPU further...

I know on 1.75-1.8v that thing has 2.3-2.5 ghz in it...
