But then when i did this the last time i remebered that I didn't use it at all.....anyone got any suggestions for a usage?

Got a cable connection here in the house behind a router...my pc..the wife's Dell...wireless.....landlord lives downstairs (two family home)...maybe i shold run wireless to him and set it up as a file server?

Serve up something. Make a router out of it. Heck my machine is used for development (mostly just class projects except for my Visual Basic class :)) as well as a file server using Samba, an FTP server for me moving files around campus, and a Bnetd server so me and my roommate can play the Warcraft III Beta ;) (I know that's "against the rules" but we're both buying the game on the first day it's out so I don't see a problem with it).

The freeware chess programs are also must better on Linux than in Windows too . . . .

I was thnking if i built it up I could also make it a backup file server for my data from my Windows machines...
Im just unsure what to do with it.....

It would be a Pentium-II 450 with like 512 meg of ram in it, and a 10 gig Harddrive to start off..then later i might bump it up but i wouldnt really need to...
I already have a router in my house (linksys BEFSR41) so I dont need to use it for that......maybe an intranet so my wife can do her scheduling from anywhere....

what would U do with another windows box? U can do the same with the nix box.

sounds like U dont need another desktop, so make it a file/backup server... maybe an ftp server for your friends.

Host a web site with your family pictures and videos on it (be sure to secure it with a password!) assuming your ISP will allow uploads from your home and you have a decent high speed connection!
