Hi,

I've been thinking about replacing my GTX 275 with a GTX 470 so I can experience smoother gameplay on my 1920x1080 HDTV. Would I notice much of a difference between my 275 and a 470?

nvidia didn't make a gtx 270. do you mean a gtx 275? what is your cpu? what games do you play that aren't smooth enough? what is your fps right now with max/min in those games?

justin case you meant 275, here's some comparison from anandtech bench. wow, hard to believe that the power consumption is so similar between those 2 cards yet 275 got very little criticism for it back in the day.

Go with a 5970 instead if you REALLY want to see a large jump in performance.

There is a performance difference but it's not going to be mind-blowing. Probably about 40-45% from GTX275. I got about 45-50% performance increase on average from the 4890 which is similar to the GTX275.

Check out a couple reviews based on the games in which your 275 struggles to see if the performance improvement is worth it for you:

http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/...x-470/6/#abschnitt_batman_arkham_asylum_physx
GTX470 is 42% faster with 4AA, 58% faster with 8AA at 1920x1080.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/geforce-gtx-465_7.html#sect1

However, I definitely would not upgrade if you are going to outright spend $250. If you can sell the 275 and offset the cost of the upgrade, it might be worthwhile (I sold my 4890, so the upgrade cost was minimal). Otherwise, I'd wait for a faster card such as 6870, or for GTX480 to come down in price.

I would not recommend the 5970. If you are going dual GPUs, might as well get GTX460s. Overclocked to 850mhz each+, they will mop the floor with 5970 in both price and performance.

I wouldn't recommend a HD 5970 at this point in the game either. But to say a pair of overlclocked GTX 460s in SLI will mop to floor with one is a stretch. Especially if the HD 5970 is overclocked to HD 5870 speeds or higher.

So nobody should buy any video cards for the next 2-3 months?

.....

Some people would rather have a card now than wait to possibly save a few dollars.

Price drops are never guaranteed.

Well then at least wait until the later end of next week as HD 5800s & the 5770s are already coming down in price. Not to mention all the sales on GTX brand cards to keep up. If a 5850 reaches $260-$250 you can't not recommend that over almost all cards.

Part of the MSI GTX 260 cyclone sale just ended yesterday and now the MSI Hawk is out. Palit has had some real deals on their massively OC'd GTX 460s as well, you can get the 800mhz OC version for $240. I prefer factory OCs if possible for the warranty.

Case in point:
HD 5770: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102858
GTX 460: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127510

AHAHA :) Thats what I was thinking, and the Op should just put up with the stuttering in his games till then.?

BY the time the new cards come out, he will be done the games on the gtx470 that are giving him trouble.

Yep, I'd wait a week anyway, these cards are starting to come down a bit. For instance: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-318-_-Product (nice cooler too, btw). If prices are going to be changing it up a bit, I would wait for the dust to settle.

If youre building a new PC of course not. But someone in OP's scenario where he currently has a perfectly capable card might be better served by waiting. If for no other reason than the inevitable price drops for the cards currently on the market.

why? evga will even warranty modded cards. I got 850/1700/2000 on stock volts on my card and I still have warranty on it.

If you don't want to spend $$$ for the top end, then the best time to buy is generally when the prices for the current range bottom out. Case in point was the prices of the GTX 260/270 and radeon 4870/4890 last year. They were approx $150 - still today you can't beat that sort of performance for that sort of money

We must be approaching this point for the nvidia 4 series soon, although I'd be loathed to buy a GTX 470 due to noise/power usage/heat/etc. If you do get one the one I would consider would be the inno3d hawk edition which has a very large custom cooler on that at least seems to keep the thing cool + quiet.

I went from a 275 to 470. Dont think I really needed it, only did it because I was bored with my hardware and wanted the excitement of a new card. If you do upgrade, avoid the reference cooler. Get something with a beefy cooler like Gigabytes Super OC or a Zotac AMP.
