Thinking about picking up Oblivion - is the GOTY edition worth the extra cash?

Title pretty much says it all - the GOTY edition of Oblivion includes the two expansion packs and the original game, but it's $50, where I can get the original version from GoGamer for a bit cheaper without the expansion packs. Do the expansion packs add anything groundbreaking that would make it worth buying them?

The first expansion pack has some good content, while the second introduces an amazing new land to visit. Well worth the extra cost.

I don't know, I got bored with it rather quickly.

Having to hammer out the dents in your armor and nicks in your sword while dungeon crawling makes it kind of a PITA.

Especially when you're in Oblivion and can't access a merchant or blacksmith.

Oh and everything scales to your level, so you'll end up with some very time consuming epic battles with skeletons or goblins.

Repairing armor never bothered me, but the damn scaling does. However, both issues can be fixed with mods.

Shivering Isles adds Golden Saints, which is enough of a reason to get the GOTY edition, if you are getting any edition at all.

Yes, Shivering Isles is great. Knights of the Nine is ok, but not a deal breaker.

Definitely load up on mods after you play vanilla for a little while. There are many mods to fix level scaling and make it feel more "epic." Shivering Isles is very cool, and KoTN is decent.

If you get it, make sure you get some mods. OOO 1.3+ makes it a lot better. There are other great mods for it too. Check out any forum for Oblivion.

I second the suggestion to use Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. It's excellent and takes away most of the problems I had with the game. My chief complaint with the OOO mod is that leveling eventually becomes too slow, and training costs too much. This can be corrected with mods, though.

If you dont have Oblivion yet then get the new version. Save tons of money as both updates would come out to 40-50 bucks anyway if you got the regular version. I got the first release version and played for about 10 hours, stopped playing for a few months and have no freaking clue what I was doing. I may get the 360 GOTY version for the simple insert disc play game factor.

A great thing about Oblivion is that there are a LOT of mods and that basically makes the PC version like 100x better than the 360 version.

Chances are, if you don't like something in Oblivion, a mod will be available for it.

Definitely recommendable, I'd say the GOTY edition is worth the cash for the Shivering Isles expansion.

I bought the game, but I can't get the second DVD to install. I went to the Oblivion website and it seems to be a common problem, but there doesn't seem to be a fix for it yet :(

I really wanted to like this game as I like RPG's. I got it when it was just released, at first I was really into the game. Once I got passed the graphics though, you realize the game is pretty blah.

It's an awesome awesome single player RPG. The scaling sucks but there are mods that fix that as were previously mentioned. There are tons of quests and things to do. You don't have to follow the story line at all and this really brings a new dimension to game play.

Bummer.

But if the second disk is the expansion stuff, you can just play the original Oblivion content until the install problem is fixed.

I liked Oblivion a lot and didn't find it boring. But most of the fun is in all the varied side quests. If you don't persue those, you miss out on a lot of cool stuff.

dittos. I played the game for maybe 6-8 hours in awe at the scenery, but whenever I tried to actually play it I got quickly bored and gave up. I played it for a few more hours months later when I got a new rig, and the same thing occurred. The dungeons are all the same, the combat simple and boring, and after playing WoW for a while the whole environment just seems so lonely.

In all fairness, you've got that cross-looking bird as your avator... it doesn't help.

Yes. Get the GotY. The expansions are GREAT, especially if you haven't spent 200 hours on mundane things in the "main" game first. I got a bit jaded when I finally picked the expansions up after so much time spent on the game already.

I managed to get it to work after 2 days of screwing around with it. I installed it on my other drive, then booted into the original drive, deleted it on the second drive, installed it again in the same spot, then went back to the first drive, and I was able to install the expansion.

Don't ask me why that worked, but it did. I didn't plan it out that way, but I was trying to get it to work, and if I had to go back to my old drive to do it, I was willing ot try. I just tried installing it again after deleting it from a different OS on a whim.

Daggerfall in the Oblivion engine would be epic, honesty though that game world was so huge 98% of it you'd never see.

Back on track, Oblivion is the best Elder Scrolls to date and I've played em all. Awesome game.
