Thinking about jumping on the Dell 1905 Deal

My main concern is this:

The 2005FPW Widescreen monitor was only $100 more a while back. I would have jumped on that; however, my Video Card is a Geforce FX 5900XT. I dont think the 5900XT has enough horsepower to run DIII and HL2 at 1080i resolutions while still retaining some of the detail settings. Additionally 100 is a lot more money.

It should be noted that i am running a KDS Visual Sensations 19" monitor that was made in 1994. Will this monitor look better (more than likely yes i presume)? Additionally will the viewable area be larger?

Do you think i should hold out for another deal on the 2001FP or 2005FPW or should i just get the 1905?

I love my 1905FP. I paid $314 for it shipped.
And yes $100.00 is a lot of money.

I'm just dissapointed that I could have got it for $269.00 if I waited. 🙁
 
To answer if it will look better or not: I'm not sure if CRTs have gone through major image quality increases over the past 11 years (besides aperature grille)...the LCD will certainly be sharper, but if the monitor you have now is any good, the LCD will likely fall behind in color reproduction. The dot pitch on LCDs is larger, so pictures may not be quite as 'fine' as they look on your CRT. Not to worry, my LCD displays images fairly well. Since I got a 6-bit panel, I am a little disappointed in the colors. Not that they look all that bad, but they could be richer. It all depends if you end up with the Samsung or AUO panel. More on this later.

Yes, the viewing area of a 19" CRT is really 17" or 18" because of the border around the screen. The Dell 1905FP will probably have a bigger viewing area. The last question is really up to you. I don't know what you want to do with your monitor. Though, providing your card is too slow to run at high resolutions, the 2001FP/2005FPW probably won't do you much good. You're going to have to run at low resolutions which will make the image look like crap, scaled, especially on a widescreen. I recommend you get the 1905FP over the other Dell models.

By the way, if at all possible, get a 1905FP with an AU Optronics LCD MVA panel in it. It's a lot better than the particular Samsung panel included in some of the 1905FP. The AUO panel has a 8ms. response time and better colors according to some forum-users. You're in luck since I THINK both the Samsung and AUO panels have 8-bit colors. I'm not sure, because I haven't seen too many 8-bit 8ms. panels out there. Check here for more information: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=31&threadid=1564244&enterthread=y

Also, if you're a gaming phreek, I don't recommend this monitor as a whole. I've heard that motion blur on this LCD is pretty noticable (maybe just the Samsung panel). Also, widescreen won't do you much good because not a whole lot of games natively support it. HardwareZone got their hands on the 19" Viewsonic VX924 4ms. LCD (AUO panel). Yes but Anand addressed that issue in the review. He said it was very good no matter what.

Is there another monitor for around 330.

True. It's good for gaming though. I love my 6-bit 12ms. panel. I'd rather have response time than colors if I was playing games...
 
Well im going to order the Dell and simply pray that i get one of the newer LCD's rather than the Samsung. If not, eh how bad could it be. Anand said that it was just as good as any other LCD but for people (like me) going from an CRT to an LCD will notice a difference.

How could you survive with that thing for ELEVEN years? I didn't know KDS was alive back then. Personally, I hate KDS monitors...

It was pretty nice back then compared to what i had.

RIght now it maxes out at 1600x1200 @60hz, and then it squeels at any Refresh Rate, so i have to just tap it a couple of times, turn it off and what not. Additionally it isn't flat screen so i cant look at it for too long.

But i gotta hand it to KDS. They certainly know how to build a monitor that will last.

Im sending mine back to Dell. The ghosting is pretty damn bad, and I supposedly have the AUO panel. I will probably be ordering the L90D+ tonight

I dont notice any ghosting anymore.

I guess I'm just used to it now. Or maybe it's because I turned down the sensitivity on my mouse when playing CS:Source.

Personally, I play CS 50% and surf/edit etc 50% it's worth having one of the best picture quality and I hardly notice any ghosting.

Also, if Dell wanted to do what the other LCD makers are doing they could claim 16ms response times but they don't. The other companies are using many tricks to claim faster response times. One of the oldest tricks is to average the Black and White only response time with the Color Response time for example: most 19" LCD have 12ms black and white and 20ms color which = ~ 16ms Response Time! wow... what a bunch of BS.

And some of the faster LCDs us only 6bit color, crappy contrast ratios and viewing angles. Yea you can buy a generic monitor for $200 bucks and the get same crap so why pay $400 or more?
 
YES, I think that it is that bad in games. Even my dad mentioned how "fuzzy" it is while moving at all. Both my suitemates have them, and they are gorgeous for a desktop LCD, but gaming they suck in. Period, first hand experience. But I think that it is safe to say that no LCD can match a CRT for gaming. I really wish they did, as I would love to get my desk back from my monitor... 😉

My personal experience supports this. Although, I wasn't aware that they made this screen with different panels. Maybe Kevin will have a better experience with his.

I've been considering the 1905 for a while. But I saw the Acer AL1914smd for about the same price, and it has 12ms response time. Reviews have been good, but there aren't that many.

Either way, it should be an upgrade from my 15" Mag (with a whopping 45ms response time).
 
Yeah, I hate UPS. If you miss their delivery and want to pick it up yourself, you have to wait until the next day. Fedex, and even DHL (even though DHL is pretty ghetto) are better, and you can pick it up same day if you want.

As for games, I'm in the ghosting camp. Depends on the game though. I could not play any FPS games on the 1905. It was that bad for me. Driving games were okay, though, and Warcraft III played perfect for some reason, with no ghosting whatsoever, even though similar 3D RTS games also ghost, weird.
