Oh so now you're mr. independent. does anyone else see the Irony in this?
Get a freakin Job, i'm 19 in college as well and did not get married to pay for it.
I don't need your life story or your perceptions of how you were raised. Reality is pretty cut and dry.Originally posted by: Auryg

It's as unfair for everyone else as is it for you. Why do you deserve special treatment? Pull the loans you cheap ass.Well, to be quite honest, I think it's pretty unfair that my income is based off of my parents even though they wont be helping out after the first year (and even then it'll just be for food and the like). I don't know why it's set up like this...I'll be 18, that should count as being on your own.
So, you're 18, are you living on your own, supporting yourself? If so, then you are on your own. Since you're living at home, and your parents do the vast majority of your life support, you are not self sufficient. Quite simple to understand.
I WILL be living on my own. I get to come home the first summer after college and that's it. Food and medical expenses help, but I'll probably end up paying for most of that myself anyways. I was raised to be independant...I buy all my clothes, pay my car insurance and gas, if I go out to eat I pay for it myself, etc...all on money that I earned. It's been that way since the 7th grade.
I don't think I deserve special treatment- I think everyone in my situation should get this treatment. I'm taking it upon myself to do that for myself...is it really that big of a deal?
I'm trying to get both sides of the arguement here, so don't take this as me trying to start a flamefest![]()

Any problems with this? I'm 17, found a girl that's willing to do it...as far as I know, if I get married, then I'm not a dependant under my parents anymore.
I'm going to talk to my lawyer soon about it, and if I go through with it I'll get a prenup...but any other things to worry about? Do you guys think it's unethical?

If you're not living on your own now, then you're not independent. Take out some loans to start and go out on your own, struggle, and then get your aid.
Why you would even consider marrying someone in order to get some school aid is beyond me. Well mabey not, you're still a teenager. Also, after you're married, wouldn't you have to show that you have an established household as a married couple before you are eligable for aid? That's how it works up here.
I don't grasp what kind of treatment you think people should get when they turn 18. So because you turn 18, you are automatically considered "independent" and therefore eligable for full financial aid, regardless of the reality of your living situation?
I stand by my statement of you being a cheapass.

I have a job, how do you think I pay for everything?
I know the value of work. I just think that this is what's actually FAIR for me. My parents wont be sending me money up the wazz for college, like a good portion of kids get. This will actually set my income to where it should be, being what I make.

She's actually the one that gave me the idea, although she wasn't speaking to me at the time.
*shrug* Don't know her all that well, and I have a friend that absolutely hates her. I hear you have to have sex for a marriage to actually be realised..haha..is that true?

Why do you think that's so laughable? I wouldn't want to be stuck with any debt she would generate over college, nor would I want to split up half of everything I have..oh noos, my video card.
And to SampSon- I will pretty much be independant by the time I'm in college, and totally independant by the second year. By your reasoning, when are you truely independant? When your parents die? When all of your relatives and friends die?
Anyways, I'm going to go to bed now, I have work in the morningYou guys have given me a lot to think about, even though a lot of it was said rudely :|
You've got a lot to learn kid. Look up the policies of financial aid as it pertains to dependency. It has to do with taxes, income and claimable dependents and households. Very simple, talk to your accountant. And to SampSon- I will pretty much be independant by the time I'm in college, and totally independant by the second year.
