Thinking about getting Direct TV...

I have Dish Network right now and it would appear to suck a little more with every passing year. It's for this reason I'm considering Direct TV. I live out in rural country and cable isn't an option, sadly. The current Directtv deals look promising, but as I've learned with Dish Network there are often hidden costs and things not always accounted for up front.

Are there any out there with Direct TV that can give me the ups and downs of them? What should I expect? Is it worth getting? Thanks, in advance.

bad: 2 year contract, kinda pricey due to upfront costs
good: I've never had a problem, lots and lots of HD channels means more channels you don't want to watch

FWIW, directv was a touch cheaper for me vs comcast and dish

depends on how many tvs you want to hookup and what services you want on each IMHO

DirecTV has been good to me since i've had it. I've only used dish a few times at a friends house but it was pretty suckish in comparison.

I've had it for 7 years and they have been fine. I'm looking to upgrade to their HD stuff, and was wondering if they have any retention discounts out there? Seems that they should offer some breaks for their existing customers and not just new customers...

My experience with Direct TV, sometimes you lose signal if the weather is bad or if there is too much snow covering the dish. HD channels are decent, too many reruns though, as if they spent too much money on the HD equipments and can't afford to make anymore new show. If you can get local channels with Direct TV, great. If not, you may need a separate antenna, most cable companies offer lifeline channels, which cover the local channels. I keep my internet connection and local channels with Cableone.

Cardiac - call up and see what kind of a deal you can get from the CSR on the phone. Be sure to mention that you would love to stay with Directv if they can beat Dish's deal.

Sonikku - I also will swear by Directv having been a customer for 9 years. I have no beef with them. If you want a million bells and whistles your package can get expensive, but all the costs are shown up front and you can scale back at any time without breaking your commitment if you hit a lean patch.

Go to DBSTalk to talk to "experts" and fanboys on dealing with Directv and satellite tv in general. You'll also find a Dish forum and OTA forum as well.
