Thinking about getting a pitbull

a good friend of mine has 3 in his house. they are great dogs that have gotten a bad rep from crappy people training them the wrong way. but you do need to take some things into consideration before raising one, they have special needs like any other kind of dog. they are very aggressive by nature, and hate to lose. there are other traits that will change the way you keep them as well, read up on the breed before making any decision on one.

If you know how to properly handle them, they should be ok. If you are not familiar with Dogs, I think you should find a less aggressive Breed.

That was quite detailed...care to explain?

Do they get along well with other dogs, or is it the standard "they're vicious and keep a careful eye" thing? I've seen a few and they looked well-mannered.

the older one (male) doesn't give a shit about other dogs, he just looks at them and then goes and pees on something if they are barking or whatever at him, he doesn't even bark back at them. The younger one (female) only gets aggressive with other dogs if they try to take away whatever she is playing with, but she is generally more interested in going and sniffing them and all that. Only time the aggressive thing is an issue if if they are at the dog park and another dog trys to take her tennis ball when shes playing fetch, and to my knowledge thats only happened once. both respond to verbal commands and all that and are basically extremely well behaved.

Jules my sister has a 2 kids, 3.5 and 2

I don't know about Pitbulls, but my Sis-in-Law's Argentinian Dogos(part Pitbull) are very aggressive towards other Dogs. Even with good Training they need to not just be watched, but to be leashed when outside a fenced in area. If you need to ask all these questions, I really think you should consider another Breed. These aggressive Breeds need a lot of attention and they will kill other Dogs if you are too casual with them.

Yeah my family just got one - great dog

We've had a bunch of dogs and none of them were as good and obedient as this one.

Golden Retriever
German Sheppard
Lab mix
pit mix

Unless your sister's were specifically bred with pitbull, they aren't part pitbull.

The majority of pits, like most dogs, are well behaved. All dogs are capable of injuring people, and most breeds have killed someone at some point in time. All dogs should be watched when socializing with other dogs, and should NEVER BE LEFT ALONE WITH CHILDREN.

Pits have a bad name, and any medium to large breed+ dog with poor training will be dangerous to a degree.

I've got a 98lb American Bulldog pup (14mo) and he's great with other animals and people, but I wouldn't leave him alone with a stranger or child or dog that he hasn't spent significant time around. He's leashed every time we go outside. It's just best practice.

I LOVE dogs, but would never get a pit bull with 2 kids around. They might be the best most family oriented dog ever, but if it mentally snapped and hurt your kids you'd never forgive yourself.
Coming from a dog lover here, I really don't see the need for pit bulls in this day and age. I'd bet over 1/2 of the dogs in the pound or SPCA kennels are pit bull mix.

Lil bros dog. This freaking dog is huge. Head like a shark but he is friendly and acts like he weighs 10lbs. He will jump and play and doesn't understand how big he is. Great dog.

Do you live in the ghetto?
Are you poor?
Are you retarded?

If you answered no to all of these, do not get a pit bull.

OP - have you ever had a dog before?

If you are unexperienced, I would suggest adopting one by an adoption group that foster's them at home. B/c their temperaments can vary so greatly, fostering allows the group to give you a better assessment of their temperament and behavior.

Why a pitbull specifically? Any reason you want this breed in particular? I would think having a pitbull would not only be a lot more work than another breed, but you'd be more susceptible to lawsuits and stuff if it were to ever act out. All it takes is one incident and bam, someone else's dog or cat (or child) is dead or injured and you're looking at a lawsuit and tens of thousands of dollars of hospital bills and fines.

This is stupid shit. Can a guy not have a pit bull just because he likes them? They are pretty dogs and it doesn't hurt to have a friend that could chew off someones arm if they broke into your house.
