hardocp says you need 384mb ram, 1.5ghz p4, and a gf4mx to play doom3.

yeah, if u're planning to play at 640x480 and look at a bunch of unrendered polygons on the screen.

if you think dell's suck and you think you know computers, you are wrong... dell's are an excellent value, just throw in some more ram, a HD, and a 9800pro and you are ready for most games...

So dell are good value, when you need to exchange and/or add extra hardware except the CPU?

That'd end up costing more...

Dells have their place, but it's not in the gaming rig market, that's for sure.

I have one I am willing to let go. Just sitting here.

Gigabyte GA-7VAXP
AMD Athlon XP2200+
1GB Kingston 2700 DDR
Western Digital 120GB Hard Drive
Asylum FX5600 256mb Video Card
Sound Blaster LIVE!
Case is a little scratched up, but nothing major.

If you read my main squeeze, you will see why I dont use it anymore.
:)

actually i'd consider the dell a barebone... take a typical 4600 for exmaple, it'll probably have:
P4 2.8 800mhz FSB
256mb 333mhz DDR
80 gig HD
integrated video (with AGP slot)
integrated sound
no speakers
windows XP home

and all costs about... $350 or so?

so what do we have? a basic computer with a pretty fast CPU. throw in a stick of 512mb DDR (about $100?), then maybe a bigger HD (the 80gig will be fine as a storage HD), and a decent video card and disable the integrated video (9800 pro costs $190) , and maybe a sound solution to suit your taste.

i mean look at the dell... the OS costs $80, the HD costs $50, the ram costs $50, the CPU costs like $150? and the mobo is about $100 i figure? not to mention the optical drive, floppy, softwares, mouse, keyboard and a bunch of crap that comes with it...

so how much would it cost you to build a basic computer w/o the OS? about $300 or so.

and how much does one of those "gaming PC" with parts that you don't exactly like (such as a 9600XT or something video card?) cost? definitely more than $700... will it have 768mb of RAM? probably not. 2 HD's? maybe...

but how about being NEARLY SILENT? i don't think so...

so there, i said it. go buy a 4600 or even a 600SC and throw parts in there. it'll be quiet, fast, cheap, comes with some free software, and a one year warranty...
