Thinking about getting a MSI GeForce 8600 GTS

I am in the market for a new video card. I don't do a lot of computer gaming, if any at all. I have had my 6600GT since they were released and now it is starting to show its age.

I am looking at http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe...oductCode=327724&prodlist=pricegrabber

This would allow me to upgrade to DX10 and also a Vista ready card. I was wondering though, is this like all the newer cards out there? Does it require a lot of power? I am only running a 380w PSU. I have it running a 3800+ X2 and 2 SATA hard drives... nothing power hungry... I just want to make sure my PSU will support this card...

i think it only uses something like 70 watts max.

i am getting one from ebay pretty soon (people are already selling these for $150 there sometimes) and will be getting it in a few days

There really isn't a lot of love for that card. Look at benches on Anandtech, Firingsquad, Xbitlabs etc. While it will be a big leap from your current card, it might be best to check some benches (if you haven't already) to decide if the DX10-ready tag will really mean much in the long run.

On the plus side, according to Xbit, it uses less than 50W at peak load. That IS awesome.

That card will perform like ass in DX10 titles.

Wait for DX10 games to upgrade to DX10, i promise you it's not a mistake.

History repeats itself every DirectX generation.

I agree. I would just buy a 7900gs for 140.00$ or 7950/gt for less than 200.00$ because it will run with your psu and is faster. I would hold off on Vista and direct x 10 for another 6 months. Theres no games yet anyway.

I would either grab a cheaper card for now and wait or shell out another $40 or so and get an 8800GTS 320MB model.

The 8600GT is actually a somewhat fairly priced card, though I agree with the sentiment that it might struggle in Dx10 games when they come out.

I am just looking for something cheap to get me by... Last game I played was Sid Mier's Pirates! when it came out lol....

I don't really need a performance increase... I just need something that works correctly unlike my 6600GT

The 7600GS isn't the best choice even if you don't game much since you have PCIe you should spend a little more for a 7600GT instead.
