Thinking About Getting a Dog

I'm about to graduate college and will be moving from a downtown campus into a house and I'd like to get a dog as soon as possible. My family has had a dog since I was ~1-2 years old, including a wire fox terrier (wireD is definitely an apt description), so I have full respect for the responsibility involved. My issue is the fact that I will likely be moving in 2-3 years, possibly to a large city into an apartment. For those of you with dogs in a Manhattan apartment or similar, how does it work out for you? I know it will be a hassle, but obviously it's done. Essentially I'm wondering how it is for walking, bathroom, while your at work (no yard obviously), etc...

Get a rat, when you're good at taking care of that move up to a cat, then to a dog.

The best part is as you move up, you can save on pet food by feeding the old pet to the new pet!

:evil: 😉

I'd recommend an American Bulldog. I have one and she is extremely laid back, and such a sweetheart.

i live on the top floor in my apartment with my wife and a miniature schnauzer...a little crate is a must to put him/her/it in when he/she/it misbehaves. they can get a good amount of exercise if u play with him/her/it regularly since mine loves to run around the apt like a psycho. mine *usually* pisses in the kitchen on newspapers or pads...it takes a while but its pretty rewarding when your dog leaves u in the middle of a play session to trot on over to the kitchen to take a piss...

heres a pic of my dog... http://members.cox.net/aries2k1/pictures/juju/juju18.jpg

I like this guy's post, I want to add to:

sub the rat for a fish if you'd like...

ultimately, when you're done with the dog, feed on the dog, and start taking care of your self?

when and if you master that... raise an alligator, then after that:

~~~~~~~~~~~~RAISE GODZILLA~~~~~~!!!!!!
Just don't ge t a big dog and then make him suffer bt being penned up in a tiny apartment with no yard and such. Get something smaller (or just get a cat).
I'll actually probably be getting fish, too. I had piranhas when I was younger, and I'd like to get another shoal or maybe a snakehead (if they weren't so damn hard to find with them being banned in the US, fvckin government infringing on my rights because of some hick fishermen). The problem is, the rat and probably the cat as well would end up as the food in this situation.
In all seriousness, litter-box training would be a good idea. I'm still not sure if I'm going to go for it as I'll be out of town a lot with my job, but it's tough not to.
want TWO dogs?
there was a poster a little while ago who can no longer look after his dogs and wants to find them a new home... together, cause they love each other.
this cracked me up for some reason.... 🙂
it's pretty cool when they do that. I was watching my parents' dog at my house one day and while I wasn't paying attention, he walks over to the living room, grabs a napkin out of the trash and pisses on it, instead of the carpet. I was in shock.
heh, sounds fun to own a dog i guess, i however feel like a cute well trained dog might just turn crazy for a second and bite your face while you sleep, or while your watchin tv or somethin... i dont know whats the chances of ratio of this happening lol but its just on the edge of my mind to think about that horror
I live in a 4 story walk up in Manhattan and it is a relief not to have to walk the dog 2 or 3 times a day. On the other hand I want a dog too. My dogs of 18 and 16 years were put down this year and I am taking a break from owning a dog right now. I torture myself by going to the CACC shelter on 110th street and check out the mutts. I wanna bring them all home, but managed to walk outta there with only a cat on the last visit. I gotta stop doing that or pick up a new best friend already.
