Thinking about getting a dog in the future... Reccomendations?

hyper and annoying? just because your friend spoiled his dog and didn't train it right doesn't mean the whole breed is that way

I personally like bigger dogs.
I had 2 German Shepherds before my 2 hounds now. I like both.. my favorite dogs are Labrador/Retrievers.. make incredibly good pets. Golden Retrievers are incredibly friendly and affectionate.. I love those dogs and I will probably get one next! Note I also really like Huskies.

My favorite breed is lab, golden retriever & field spaniel.

I have had a lab, a golden retriever & a shepherd as pet when I were young. And, my favorite/best friend were the golden retriever. The sphepherd weren't as friendly as the lab/retriever, and it seemed to be bit more of a barker.

only time he ever barks is when someone he dosent know comes to teh door. and even then its onl 2 or 3 barks and he just looks at you. you say hello and hes fine.

lil dongs like pomerians bark at him and he just looks at them all funny and dosent even care. he just walks away and pees on something

theres one downstairs. its not a big dog. hyper though. wasn't full grown last time i saw him though

Get a retired Greyhound. They are very mild-mannered, good for people with allergies (no animal is 'allergy-proof' - anyone who says that is mistaken. some are just less allergy inducing than others), and contrary to popular belief, they don't need a big yard. They are very thin skinned and don't like being outside in the cold or very hot. Our girl gets one 30-40 minute walk a day, and it is plenty of exercise for her. I've seen books that say they really only need 2 10 minute walks a day.

Yup, that pretty much sums it up. Contrary to popular belief, they don't need much exercise....they'd much rather lie around on your couch all day. They are also extremely calm dogs for the most part (a popular breed for hospital "pet therapy" programs) and do very well with other pets, kids, adults, whatever. They are weenies about cold weather, but this shouldn't be a big deal since Aphex is in FL.

If you want a sweet puppy....very adorable and affectionate....get a Beagle...

At times they may be a little feisty....(I don't know any puppies that aren't) but in time will be less active...they sleep ALOT..

And if you want a puppy that will help you with the ladies..get the Beagle...I'll prove it..

One caveat...Beagles are a very "vocal" breed (ie- they tend to bark....a LOT). Maybe not a good choice for an apartment dweller. They do have very sweet dispositions tho.

Aphex, I have a yellow lab. He was a real bear for the first year. We would walk him twice a day and play with him almost every chance we got, but he still had energy. He's almost three now. We still walk him twice a day. He has calmed down a little, but he still loves to play and has a lot of energy. If you don't have a yard I wouldn't recommend a yellow lab.

If I were getting a future dog it would have to be DynoMutt. Well maybe K9 from Doctor Who, but DynoMutt is just way cooler.

I think it's a toss up when you get a dog whether it's going to be a barker or not...this Beagle isn't a barker at all...but I've had other small dogs that wouldn't shut up....nevertheless there are gadgets that help with this...

i have one of these. they are great people dogs.
they dont shead ( they do loose hair but it is minimal )
very smart, easy to train ( you have to be the dominate one )
great gaurd dog.

That's the other thing... this lab sheds like nobody's business. I'm sure he should be bald by now, but it just seems to keep on coming.

good for people with allergies. They don't shed.
When a black lab is brought over to our house for 2 hours, I spend more time cleaning hair than I ever have over the past 5 years with my Wheatons.

Had a minature Schnauzer as a kid, great dog, loyal, no shedding/good with allergies. Not too active but needs a walk or two.

I currently have a Norwegian Elkhound, good size, very loyal and sweet, very intelligent. You need to train them firmly as their smart enough to test the limits of your commands. I also like Labs and Golden retrievers but really none of these are apartment dogs.

I cried for days when my Kiki passes away. I was 11 at the time & I spend a good 3 hours to dig a grave for it in my parent backyard/orchard. And, then planted a sour sop tree to mark the grave after a small ceremony for it.
