thinking about doing RAID setup, need some pointers

i am thinking about getting a second velociraptor to go with the one i have to run them in a RAID setup. what RAID would i want to use? i have never run RAID before so this will be my first time doing it. thanx to all that reply

For a stripped array?....pointless and doubles your chance of HDD failure.....

if you are desiring more I/O performance, spend the money on a SSD instead. its faster and more reliable than what you are considering.

solid state cost what? $350 or more right now for good one? versus $100 or so for another velociraptor?

If you're going to go with RAID 0, I'd have another drive to store any important personal files and just use the array of velociraptors for OS and programs only.

Yes, RAID 0 is stripped accross both drives, though already said, SSD is better, perhaps image the 1st to your storage, sell the drive and buy a SSD....

If you run RAID 0 make sure to have your system backed up. If either drive fails you lose EVERYTHING.

Also be aware that your going to have to reload Windows if your SATA controller is set to IDE mode in BIOS. If you set it to Raid, the system will no longer boot and a fresh install of windows is required.

like i said i have storage drives with everything backed up, formatting and installing windows is not a problem for me. i do that 2-3 times a year for that fresh feeling for windows i bet people at Microsoft recognize my phone number when i call in to activate my vista. for those saying get SSD what one would you recommend? keep in mind i need about 80gb in size for my programs and vista itself, and that is pushing it. what size is best for SSD?
