Thinking about cutting down a tree?

The guy running with the chainsaw is also pretty good. He goes off camera, but I don't think he gets hurt. And he outran the falling tree.

I worked as a crane operator for a company that also had a tree service. Probably 80% of my work was with the tree crews.

I've seen some spectacular fuck-ups...fortunately, in spite of their best attempts, none of them were while attached to my hook. (but several were VERY close calls)

yeah I love that when they ask "Can you pick that up" when they have no clue how to estimate it. Sheesh, like trees have handy placards on them. 😛

When it's bad...you have the crane stretched out over top of an apartment house...(all occupants vacated) and you tell them..."Only cut about 10 feet," and they proceed to cut 15-20 feet and you're instantly overloaded by as much as 50%...and it takes all your knowledge and experience to (a) keep the over-sized piece of tree trunk out of the building, and (b) keep your crane from tipping over into the building...and (c) not kicking the ass of the fucking Mexicans sitting in the tree laughing at you while you do (a) and (b).

MOST trees can be estimated pretty accurately, but of course, there will be variations based on water content and density of the wood.
That job gave me more "Oh SHIT!" moments than almost any job I've ever had.

If...if you always cut it from the side in which you want it to fall, wouldn't that always work? I mean, if you had a house on the right, and you wanted it to land left, wouldn't you just cut from the left side?

Watch the videos. A lot of them do not fall on the side they cut out.

That kind of thinking is what made all those videos and insurance claims possible. 😀

Factors for falling trees:
Wind
lean
limbs and mass distribution
Twist of the wood
rot

You develop the basic skills by falling a few hundred trees.
It gets better after a few thousand.
