Thinking about changing web host and domain name host...

Hello,

I got in on the 1and1 deal way back in the day. My contract is pretty much up for the web hosting, as well as for the domain name hosting. I'm thinking about moving over to another host (dream something?). I don't anticipate any issues with having a new host, all I need to do is download my files and reupload them.

But how does the domain name work? Do I need to trasnfer ownership or what?

I'm a bit confused.

1. The *most important* thing in this case is your domain name - move that away from 1&1 ASAP. Transfer to namecheap or something.
2. The host you are thinking of is dreamhost.com - let me ask, how much disk space and bandwidth are you actually using? Do you need something like what they provide? Maybe a smaller plan will work well for you?
3. What are you using this site for? Just personal email, files, etc.?

Yea transfer your domain name from 1and1 to a third party domain registrar like namecheap or godaddy. You must do this because some hosts are evil and it's their plot to keep you as their customer because they have your domain name. As for hosting if you're just looking for some file storage look up the free ATOT web hosting thread, it may fit your needs.
