thinking about changing career to pharmacy area

my friend works in a Pharmacy, crappy hours but you can make good money

have to go to school though, expensive
 
I'm thinking about going into pharmacy as well (I hate law). From what I understand all you need to get in is an associate's degree with the prereqs and the PCAT. So 2 years of prepharmacy + 4 Pharm.D. I'd be interested in hearing any pharmacists' opinions here about their jobs.

Well, that's interesting...I could handle 2 years JC + 4 years pharma.... Now, I just need my wife to get her nursing degree so she can support me while I get it. 🙂
 
my mother is a pharmacist, so i have a pretty good take on this issue. cptobvious is right, its 2 years of pre-pharm (basic chem courses, etc) then a 4 year pharm.d. program. Once you become a licensed pharmacist, you can either do clinical (hospital job) or retail (walgreens/cvs/name your local pharmacy). Retail pharmacists are in huge demand at the moment and make 100k or more per year straight out of school. However, retail pharmacy is also very boring, repetitive, and just plain sucks because you have to deal with the public (lots of mean old nasty people and drug addicts come in to my mom's pharmacy). Plus, you have to work crappy hours and stand on your feet literally all day with no bathroom breaks and no lunch hour. Clinical is the way to go, however it pays 10-20k less per year.

Pharm techs get paid minimum wage unless you become a licensed tech, in which case you make 20-25/hour. If you are going to shoot for tech licensure, don't go through school, work as a regular tech and then take the test to become licensed, its cheaper, easier, and you make money along the way.

The pharmacy field is growing rapidly and evolving on a daily basis. Plus, it is very very good money, even when done legally. I often tease my mom and call her a drug dealer.

Good info (thanks david46675). I was thinking of going the clinical route (though I've heard it requires 1 extra year of residency on top of the Pharm.D).
