Alright im only 17 and about to graduate Highschool next summer. Ive been tthinking about careers mainly in the hardware department.

I like opening up computers and working with the insides. You guys know if this is a good way to go. I want to steer away from the programming department and i might open up a PC building/help shop in my garage( alot of people do this). I live in Canada, Vancouver more precisely, and the Technology area is vastly growing here so i want to be a part of it.

So is hardware a viable area of the technology area or should i ditch it and go somewhere else?

thanks!

Entry-level computer-related jobs suck.

Go to college.

think about what you like, and also think about money. A lot of people say to just chase your dream or whatever, but realistically, you need a stable income to survive.

based on what you wrote, I say go for it. But, realistically, it might not be 'engineering level' salary....if you are fine with it, then it should be fine.

There are a lot more fun things to do with hardware than fixing grandma's 'puter.

This. I would think fixing computers would be at the bottom of the totem pole for computer degrees. But if that's what you like, go into IT and get some networking skills too.

Then some type of engineering is in your future, which does not match up to ANY of your interests in the OP

Unless you want to become an IT guy...at which point I guess it would depend if your college offered those types of courses

It's not that, it's just that there are a lot of people who do this "hardware" thing you speak of. The "software" side has more money in it because there are fewer willing and able souls in that area.

This.

I first went into computer engineering because I enjoyed fixing and building computers... definitely not the same

Like a general computer technician who works in hospitals and school districts. or possibly working at some large companies such as nvidia, ati, amd, intel, asus or practically anything.

Aklso what type on people employ computer engineers?

What you want is generally called "local support" (at least that is what it was called when I worked helpdesk)

Basically, you'll need

2yr degree in business computer systems(or it will be called something like that)

OR

go to the tech school and see what they have for network admin/computer technician. Look for MCSE and cisco certification.

OR.

Get a BS in Information Systems.

Yes from your description you want to be in IT. Less money than engineering and you have to deal with retards. It's not all bad and you can definitely make a good living but don't expect to hit it rich.

60-70k is engineering....so....support will probably be 3/4 of that.
