Thinking about buying a Wii

I haven't owned a console system since the N64 I bought a long time ago. Since then I've been playing computer games exclusively and have been out of the loop when it comes to console gaming.

I've heard Wii is a good multiplayer console and have been wanting something to make my town home a little more fun to hangout in. Watching movies, eating food, and alcohol can only take you so far...at least the first two.

Is the Wii a good choice? What accessories and games should I pick up? How much would a good multiplayer arrangement cost?

Moved from Off Topic.

Piss off old man. Why would I waste my time posting this in a forum even slower than OT?

If you going to use it as a party toy, then jam away... Just don't expect it to fulfill all your needs...

Just one of the tools. It's easier to get a group of people together with "let's play mario kart" than "lets flip through crappy shows on cable."

i regret selling the Wii. Played it the other day and it was a lot of fun. Some new, awesome games on the horizon. Definitely a system to have when having get togethers. You will burn many hours with Wii Sports / Wii Resort / Punchout, etc.

Get it!

It's pretty fun. Good for groups. Wii Sports is fun. Mario Cart is great, especially in groups, but single play is really good, too.

Wife bought the WiiFit and Wii Active and loves it. I tried the Wii Active, and it is quite the workout...

Wii Sports(comes with the Wii), Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are great multiplayer games that you can just pick up and play with people and have fun. Warioware isn't really multiplayer per se, but a group of people can sit around the TV and play it while drinking and have a blast for countless hours. You'll want to have one Wiimote and Nunchuck per player you intend to have over for most games.(The Wii comes with one wiimote and nunchuck already) I suggest buying rechargeable AA batteries if you don't have some already. You'll need two per controller/person.

I'm not a gamer in general, but the wii is a lot of fun for almost everyone I know. It doesn't require advanced gaming coordination to have a good time either, and is a perfect outlet for get-togethers etc.

Dokapon kingdom is a real good one too although mixed with alcohol it will lead to some arguments. Bastardly game.

Wii sports resort is also pretty fun although it's a bit annoying having to shell out 20 for each additional M+ to play the damn game.

I wouldn't bother. It's fun, sure, but the novelty wears off after a while. My parents still seem to love theirs though... maybe because they don't play it a lot.

Fun with groups. Single player is like masturbating, at first its fun but then you realize that your just a loner with no one that loves you.

I've been playing a lot recently... New Play Control Pikmin, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Super Mario Galaxy, Punch-Out!!, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Mad World, The Conduit, and Wii Sports Resort, some old Guitar Hero III, etc. Having a blast too.

Anyone who says that the Wii isn't for "core" gamers is an idiot who didn't realize that "core" gamers had a Gamecube/XBOX in the last generation and the PS2 was for the mainstream casual gamer. Despite the Wii selling MASSIVELY to the casual public, Nintendo has served the core gamer every bit as well... BETTER than they have in the past (a triple-A title at launch?! SHENS!). From launch with "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" all the way up until now with "Punch-Out!!."

I like the Wii but the motion control is overrated. Mario Kart for example I think I would like better without the motion controls. I just like it for Mario and Zelda.

If I could only have one system and owned an HDTV I would strongly consider a 360. Graphics aren't everything but the Wii is starting to look pretty dated compared to what is coming out on the 360.

Also the controllers cost a fortune. $40 for the basic controller + $30 nunchuck and another $20 for the motionplus which is a must have for the newer games IMO. That's $360 for 4 controller!!

You can get a wireless Xbox controller for $30 at Amazon!

As you can see, I upload pretty infrequently. How about on the next one? ;)

What? Firstly, the nunchuk is $20... you inflated the price by 50%. Did you forget that the console INCLUDES a nunchuk controller and Wii remote? Anyway, most people get their second Wii Remote with Wii Play, which is a bargain by any measure. Third, what games need a full compliment of remotes and accessories? Not many that I am aware of. Each remote can store your Mii on it because guests are expected to bring their own.

I, for one, am THRILLED that each part is sold separately. When the Wii launched I used Best Buy Gamer's Gift Card coupons to nab each for $5 off, which made it cheaper than a PS3's $50 SIXAXIS controller, which lacked the Wii's pointer function (IR camera) and speaker. Since then, the PS3's standard controller has been replaced with the DualShock 3 SIXAXIS for $55! The Motion Plus adapter is included for free with MULTIPLE games. Nintendo themselves said that they may even build it into future Wii Remotes and I wouldn't doubt it if that became the standard controller very soon. If anyone pays $20 for it it will be only because they wanted to.

Why use prices beyond MSRP for the Wii controller sets and then point out a special price at Amazon to compare it to the XBOX 360's controller? I have at least 12 never-paired Wii Remotes thanks to finding them for under $10 at thrift stores all the time (and passed up many more!)... compared to a previously paired but currently unpaired used remote, never-paired Wii Remotes behave differently leading customers to think that it is broken. Then they return or donate it. Why aren't you specing the XBOX 360 controller out fully with the chat pad, headset, Play 'n' Charge kit, stand-alone charge cable, etc and then adding $10 and multiplying THAT by 4x?

Anyone denying the Wii's controller value hasn't truly compared it to the competition including what it does that they do not. Are you going to FURTHER inflate that estimate with 4x Classic Controllers, 4x Gamecube Wavebird Wireless controllers (as if you'd even need them with 4x Classic Controllers), and 4x standard Gamecube controllers (Wavebird doesn't do force-feedback)? How about 4x Wii Zappers and 4x Wii Wheels? 4x aftermarket straps and controller sleeves? Where do we draw the line on this ridiculous "value" comparison?

Ok I was $10 off. That is still $30 + $20 + $20 = $70 per controller. And the Motionplus is not going to be built into the controller anytime soon. Who cares if some games don't require the whole assortment.. Why would you want to buy a system and be immediated limited in your game selection? You can play 99% of Xbox games with the stock controller.

So Wii with four controllers: $250 + $70(3) = $460

Xbox 360 = $200 + $35(3) = $305 Hell even if you spend another $100 and get it with the hard drive (which you don't need for any games) it is still cheaper.

I still like the Wii but if you are a moderately serious gamer I think the Xbox is a better value. A lot bigger selection of well made games.

Price was always a big selling point for the Wii but I don't think that is the case anymore.
