Thinking about buying a new-ish car, under 10k

I'm starting to think about buying a new-ish car for my driving needs. If I do I'm aiming for 30mpg or more and reliable.

My vehicle history -
1987 dodge k-car $500, lasted two years, threw a rod. junkyard, got less thank $50 back

1972 VW Beetle $2500 - Still have, one engine died, bought a used one for a few hundred $ and installed. Still going, but needs a new paint job after the crap one on it started flaking and a porsche cayenne sped up a hill and hit me making a left turn buckling the fender. Mostly reliable, but has some complaints and is only getting 20mpg ish.

1997 Volvo 960 - $450. Seller drove it in NYC, it had been sideswiped twice but was just horrible cosmetic damage. under 100k miles, he drove it down to Ky and picked up a new car his sister was giving him and needed to sell it in 7 days before he returned. Nice to have modern amenities, but it lasted 6 months. I started to do some routine maint and get it cleaned up when the timing belt went. Sold it to a individual to scavenge for parts for nearly as much as I paid for it.

Went back to driving the VW, picked up some motorycles(1975 CB550k1 and a 1978 CB750K8). Winter came around and it got cold again, and the VW stopped charging it's battery.

Found an 88 tercel, picked it up for $220 + a drill press. It has issues, drove it for 6 months. It's started to flood after I drive it to work and let it sit for 8 hours. Tired of dealing with it and it's nice to drive around in the VW. I don't feel like trying to rebuild the carb so I through it up for sale, asking $700 and have some nibbles, will probably walk away with $500.

At this point I'm looking at either putting a chunk of change into new carburetion into the VW to get it above 30mpg, but I probably need to go through the entire thing and start checking the joints and getting the bodywork and paint done right will be $$$. I don't think I'd be out a whole lot just to get it more reliable and better mpg, but the bodywork is what I'm afraid of.

My father continues to insist that it would be a good idea to get something newer and more reliable and keep the VW as my play car. He's using the same line with my brother and his Jeep that he loves to break differentials in.

So I'm keeping my pulse on craiglist. There's the 01 kia rio with 110k miles that I can pay cash for and get for around $2500. I can spring for an Aveo( I think they are ugly though, and my future wife already has a scion xa) with 25k miles asking $7k, and would need to get a loan, which is a waste of money but it might not be a bad idea to get one on my credit history. There are some late 90's chevy prizms for under $2k.

There just seem to be too many options in this range. I'm obviously a fan of the cheap car, and still odly nostalgic for my K-car. But I'm thinking about dipping my toes into the airbag packing world. Where to shop, where to go for market values?

Try getting a newer car (few years old) with less miles on it. Surely you can find a good one for 10k.

Yea, but I'd rather find a good one for $3-4k or less. Or throw new dual wimpy carbs on my VW for $700, a new alternator and regulator for about $150 and call it a day. I'd probably have to buy and learn to use a wideband to tune it right though.

To be honest I have been searching primarly in the under $4k range. Saw the Aveo with just 25k miles for $7k today and started to think about the stupid loan thing. Looking at buying a house next summer/fall and I'd like to be debt free, but I'm also still improving my credit score and waiting for my stupid youth charge-offs to roll off and I've never had an installment payment hit my report, only been back on credit cards for a year now.

cant AVEO's be had for 7k NEW?

To be honest with you, buying an older car will be nothing but trouble for you on the long run. Until a few years ago, I used to buy older cars (had 4 of em) and used them as my daily driver and something always was going out or breaking every few months or so. An older car may run well but you'll be paying for higher maintenance costs by replacing a brake cylinder, alternator, starter, fuel injector etc. This may be acceptable for you if you can work on your car and change the parts yourself.

fueleconomy.gov lists this as a 20/28 car with the 4 cylinder with a 23mpg combined. Ideally I'd like 30 city, but I realise that limits me a lot, but I'd still like to get 30mpg average.

Right now I'm thinking I'm going to be looking at some kia and hyundai options. I wouldn't mind a nice domestic, but I'm just not sure there are any with the mpg to back it up. I know several are in the works, but I've decided it doesn't make sense to wait for them, because I doubt I'd buy one new.

A late 90s Civic, Accord, Camry, or Corolla will serve you _very_ well, for (probably) under 5k. Get one and run it into the ground ;)

A late 90's Protege or Ford Escort is reliable and gets good gas mileage and 'esp the ford ' dirt cheap. Add Sentra's or Saturns to that list too

freaking craigslist. First place I turn to to look for local stuff, and every single ad I am clicking on has the low res scammer pics on it.

Fiancee got an email back from the Aveo guy, he is selling it for a friend with a California number.

ahh another beater driver. I currently have a 89 dodge caravan turbo, think k-car only taller and much faster, that I paid $800 for 6 years ago and a 94 mazda miata turbo which is the most expensive car I have ever bought at $4k. I'd say get a miata and use the VW when you do need something bigger :). Late 90s Ford Escorts aren't bad either. My sister had one of those and other then her wrecking it ever other week it was a decent little POS.

i like these recommendations. we have a 97 mazda protege (1.5L version) and have never gotten under 28mpg (that's with hard driving). it generally averages 31ish. our 200sx (sentra coupe) is slightly modified and gets 25mpg on average with 90ish% city driving. i got 28.5mpg once and that was with ~60% freeway driving on the tank.

the miata recommendation i like as well.

My neighbor has a mid 90's white escort in GREAT condition. I don't know why he still drives it, but it runs like a champ. Over 150k mi on it.

It's kind of funny, you see his car outside of his house and across the street those people have an 08 camry, down the road theres a family with a 08 edge SEL, we have newer cars, all my other neighbors do too.

He probably has better things to waste money on then a newer boring car when an old boring car works just as well.
