Thinking about buying a new car....

Hey Guys,
i currently drive a 1993 honda accord EX, i hit 200,000 miles yesterday. the car is in great condition, but my mileage and performance is tanking like crazy. I get about 19 mpg combined, and less than 300 to the tank. I used to get around 395-400 miles to the tank, and around 27-20 MPG. I am deciding if the problem doesn't get fixed, i might sell this car and get a 2004 Acura TL. What i need help is deciding if i should get a new car, i am a college student, i make roughly around $800 a month, i work for the school/state, so i guess a consistent job. If i did indeed get the car, it would cost me around $200 a month for the car payments. As a college student, and etc, you guys think i should get the car ? you guys have any past experiences ?

need bunch of help !
Thanks !

if your fuel economy has been hit that hard, a tuneup would probably do wonders. If it still runs fine, then it sure as hell beats the cost of a new car. Drive that thing into the ground...

im trying to find out what the problem is, i have taken it to the shop, and they dont know whats wrong with it either.
the problems started right after i got into a accident this year.

$200 monthly payment, but what about insurance? Are you paying for it, or your folks? On a car like that at your age, I imagine it would be steep.

I say keep the car. Even at 19 combined, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the alternative.

If you need a new car and the one you have is working, make the 200 car payments to yourself in a savings account and buy a used car with cash. A college kid does not need a car payment and you don't need to finance it either. You'll be upside down in a car and a payment you really cannot afford. Your 800 per month salary should be hitting a savings account to pay for your college so you aren't nose deep in student loans.

FINANCING A CAR IN YOUR POSITION IS ONE OF THE DUMBEST THINGS YOU CAN DO.

If the only thing wrong is that it drinks more gas, KEEP IT.
One extra tank per month would have been $60 at the worst.

200 dollar payment on a 800/month income? 25percent of your income for a vehicle is not a good idea.

Most people's mortgage is around 25 percent.

Keep driving your Civic until the wheels fall off or you graduate, whichever comes first. 19mpg vs 27mpg isn't that big of a difference when gas is only $1.60/gal, plus if you are a college student, i bet you drive less than 10k miles year.

get a full time job, then and only then get a new car or house, depending on your priorities. Don't do it while you still have college / debt. Keep your old till then.

Keep the Accord until it dies. If you MUST get a new car, get a used domestic econobox that's already taken the massive depreciation hit and can be bought for a few Gs cash.

A brand new Japanese lux car is NOT what you want / need.

Only making $800 a month and you have a good running vehicle? Where are your priorities? I think buying a newer vehicle is a bad idea.

I am not a fan of driving your car into the ground. Why drive it until it is too expensive to fix, then you don't have a car for a week or so...which is a huge pain in the ass if you rely on it. However, spending $200 a month on a car when you opnly make $800 a month probably isn't the best idea.

Second the tune up & O2 sensors check. It will be much cheaper than purchasing another car.
