Thinking about buying a laptop then returning it...

Long story short, I paid good money for a Laptop @ futureshop and purchased extended warranty which cost a whopping $400. The laptop completely failed, I took it in and it took them 58 days to get it back to me (60 is the cut off for getting a replacement). When I got it back half of the stuff wasn't even fixed, the laptop was still pretty much unusable. So I took it back in, and they told me they have to send it away again and it will most likely take another 60 days.

So now I'm out of a laptop for 120 days, they won't give me a replacement and they do not give out loaners. I'm going on a business trip next week and I really need a laptop with me. I'm thinking about buying a new one and then returning it for a refund when I get back.

Before I go ahead and buy a new laptop, I want to be sure that I can take it back if the package was opened. Will they only give me a full refund if the package wasn't opened or does it matter? It says this on their website:

"if for any reason you are not completely satisfied with your purchases, Future Shop will gladly give you a full refund or exchange. Simply return the product within 30 days (14 days for Computers, Monitors, Printers, Notebook Computers, Camcorders, Digital Cameras, Radar Detectors, Portable DVD Players and Air Conditioners) in its original condition and packaging (including all manuals & accessories) along with the original sales receipts."

they'll take it back, it'll have to be in the original condition it came in though

futureshop's warranty is a joke - sorry you were taken but I wouldn't abuse the store's policies like this.

I doubt this would work. Besides, they've already screwed you once, do you want to give them more money?

Technically I wasn't "screwed", I feel like I was.. but legally I wasn't. Their extended product plan says that they can take up to 60 days to fix something, if it takes longer than 60 days than you are entitled to a replacement. They also have a "no lemon" policy, but this requires that you have 3 MAJOR repairs before they will offer a replacement.

On the other hand, I spent over $2,500 for the laptop and service plan and will have been out of a laptop for 120 days, and it's something I require for work.

When I bought the laptop they made it sound like the work was done in house, they always push the fact that if you buy the extended warranty "we don't have to send it back to the manufacturer, which takes forever". But I guess it's my fault for not reading the fine print/asking more questions on their policy

as I said, they'll take it back w/o a restocking fee (and I do know Staples will, I worked at one for two years)
take it as a lesson learned, extended warranties aren't worth it IMO

Sounds like you are mostly to blame for buying one with a 60 (!) day time frame.

The fact that they didn't fix half of the stuff may open them up for a little bit of karmic payback - I'll leave that up to you - but taking it out on CC or BB may be somewhat uncalled for (not that they're saints either).
