right now seeing that even the most powerful dx10 cards can't handle dx10 games right now, is it a good idea to buy a cheap dx10 card such as the 8600gts and then upgrading to a better one later? can the 8600gts play dx9 games well and will it be able to play dx10 in dx9 mode. by the way i ussually try to game at 1680x1050

If you are concerned about DX10 performance you probably shouldn't buy a DX10 card right now, this late in the scheme of things, so close to the supposed 8900 refresh.

If you want DX10 now, an 8600GTS would be fine but if you just want DX9 performance for the time being...

I could suggest one of these:
7600GT - $90
7900GS OC - $125

DX10 is worthless at this point unless you own a 2900/8800 series card.

For DX9 gaming today, you want an X1950XT or 7950, or a 8800 GTS if you can afford it. This close to the DX10 refresh, I'd recommend the cheaper route, then upgrade to a beefier DX10 card down the line when more games take advantage of it.

You need Vista for DX10, btw.

X1950XT should do very nicely. Then jump on the DX10 refresh cards later on when you want to go Vista/DX10.

Doubtful, the memory on it is pretty high speed, and is likely the reason for the price as it is. Even much slower older cards like the 7800GT/GS are not much cheaper. 95% certain that the X1950XT will disappear from retail before the price goes down any more.

The 8600GTS does "okay" in DX9 titles.

The 7950GT is a better card than the 7900GS OC but I made the recommendation on the assumption that you didn't want to spend too much at this time.
Also, if the card you are going to buy now is above $200 price range (7950GT)...IMHO...you might as well get an 8800GTS 320MB.

The X1950XT, however, is a very good bang for your buck at the current price of $170.
