Thinking about buying a barebones system...

A XPC Barebone (I just learned what XPC is today). Is it true it is cheaper than buying a pre-assembled PC?

I have never owned a custom computer. Looks a lot funner choosing my own gear and assembling; only concern I have are there software/driver issues with these systems?

I will not be buying one anytime soon, will save the surprise when the next Windows OS comes out (and is a bit stable).

Not to mention, they look really stylish to me 😀

the next windows os is coming out late 2009/2010.. so by then the model you are looking at will be discontinued. or i guess you can find one cheaper used off ebay then

I'm not looking for a particular model. Just in the beginning thoughts of a do-it-yourself PC.

I'm not much of a computer geek, but I know I do not like my slugish Gateway laptop.

its a little unusual to be planning for something a year or two from now. but shuttles are pretty easy. most of it is put together for you already.

AGAIN. My concern is the software/drivers.

And excuse me for what you think is unusual.

If I cant get any assistance, can I at least have some website recommendations?

umm.. yeah. ok.

good luck with that. how about asking maybe a year and a half into the future. nobody knows what software/drivers will be like then. nobody knows how or what hardware will be like. who has a crystal ball?

its like if i asked in a forum for people to give me recommendations on what video card to buy two years from now.

i've had 2 Shuttles & an AMS G-Box. i like them (Shuttles), my preference being the
ones without the stealth drive bays.

the last one had a 3.06 P4 with HT & replaced a Tyan Xeon motherboard in a 4U server case. just as fast - the Tyan only had one CPU - & 1/4 the size.

go to shuttles website, or newegg, or zzf or directron or wherever.

drivers and software cant be predicted a year and change in advance, and with the speed at which computers and tech changes, the only thing you need to have in mind for a year and a half from now is how much money you want to have saved by then.

with computers, it will always be the more money you can spend, the better a machine youll get. be it more powerful, or smaller, or quieter...the more money you have, the more you can spend to get what you want.

right now, i want a headless SFF atom-based system. i cant afford one today because something came up, but i only need about $200 to get what i want. when i have the cash *then* ill start shopping and deciding on the details. itll be after christmas, checking things now is a waste of time.
