Thinking About an Xbox

I'm thinking about buying an Xbox for gaming because my PC is getting very expensive to keep up to date. I actually just realised that I could have gotten an Xbox, a controller, and a couple of games with the price of my last video card (not that I regret the purchase). How is the Xbox for RPG's, though? That's my favorite type of game. That, and hockey. I'm talking about japanese style RPGs such as Final Fantasy, Grandia, etc. I havn't actually seen any, so I'm wondering if that's a weak spot? It's a tough decision between the Xbox and PS2. Xbox an be modded and has better graphics and all, but PS2 is definately the best console for RPGs.

I'm thinking about one too. I got a projector from work and some friends came over last weekend with theirs. It ROCKED playing it on a huge screen. But I don't want to shell out $150 for the system and another couple hundred on some games. So I'm trying to find someone getting rid of one for cheap or seeing what else I could come up with.

I guess the online part of it is way better than the other game system's online experience.

That's the exact reason I switched from PC gaming.
I'm not too up on Japanese RPGs on the XBox, but there are great Western developed ones. Bioware is just pounding great titles out, and the big gun Fable from over in the UK is supposed to be a real beauty.
There's three or four different hockey games too, so at least one of them will blow you away no doubt.
I say go for it! Buy the XBox, convert your gaming lifestyle to the casual console on the big tv, and enjoy! :)

Theres a pretty big selection nowadays. Not so many good RPG's, but $120 for years of fun seems worth it. Mine got stolen, waiting to buy a new one:(

Man, this is a hard choice... moving away from PC gaming also means not keeping my PC nice and fast for video editing and such. Think maybe I'll wait a while. I just upgraded my PC not too long ago anyway... =/

Of course PS2, why would anyone say it has better graphics than PC?

EDIT: Well, actually, the graphics appear better on a TV. A PC monitor shows every graphical flaw while a TV hides a lot of things like aliasing and artifacts. I have my PC hooked up to my big screen, and CS source looks way better on it, because I can have AA/AF off, and play at low resolution so the frame rate is super high. It's a very roundabout way to improve the visual quality, but hey, it works.

definitely buy it, even if the reason is just to mod it and use it as a media player on the big screen :D, that alone is worth the money you spend.

I rarely touch my computer since I got my xbox. I don't know if you have played it but Knights of the Old republic was a great game and so is Morrowind. Morrowind is actually driving me crazy right now, I have been playing for a couple weeks and I have barely scratched the surface.

Wow, no one as really responded to the question at hand. He likes japanese style RPG and someone would even think for a minute to suggest XBOX over PS2.... WOOT BBQ.

I'm very happy myself with my BOX but I would never consider buying xbox over ps2 for RPG, certainly not japanese RPG !

Go get yourself a PS2 and the 20+ japanes RPG that comes with it.

My computer is already hooked to my big screen. :) PC is the ultimate media player.

I liked KOTOR somewhat, but I played Morrowind for about 20 hours and never was able to get into it so I eventually stopped. North American RPGs are just not for me. Maybe it's the complicated system, or maybe it's the fact that the D&D system shows through the game in the menus and dialogues and everything, but I just can't get used to them. Japanese RPGs appear more polished and straightforward to me.

He could probably do it on his actual PC. And I think there is actually some very decent RPG on the PS2 that are very stylish and enjoyable. Not to say the titles to come !

I could, but that's what my Playstation and SNES are there for. PS2 has some good RPGs, though of course not as many as the ones mentioned before.

Honestly, the XBox is awesome because of its modibility capabilities. I mean I purchased an XBox a few months ago and just modded it myself three days ago. The things you can do with a modded XBox is amazing. XBox Media Center is an amazing application that plays vcds, svcds, .avi, .mpeg etc. Its endless amounts of fun.

I'm just wondering, can you transfer things easily between your PC and Xbox? And can you play online without using Xbox Live?

If you know how to use a FTP client, you can transfer to/from your Xbox with ease. Secondly, programs like XBConnect make any System Linkable game playable over the Internet. :)

If you are thinking of getting an xbox (or any console) go to ebgames (or any other game site) and make a LIST of what games you think you might actually want to play. If your list includes 5 games that sound amazing (not just ho-hum-maybe) then buy it. If it doesn't, then don't.

That simple.

I am modding my Xbox as I writing this. I was going to get the solderless but decided against it due the fact many people complaint of the solderless misallignment. I got the Executer 2.3 lite. I started soldering last week when I decide to mod the Xbox myself. The hardest point to solder is the D0. You can use the alternative D0 point on the back of the motherboard which is a lot easier to solder. All wires were soldered and I am ready to put everything back and see if it boots. Wish me luck.
