Thinking about an external DVDRW, which is the best one out there right now?

I was lookin at the Samsung 18x External DVD+RW w/Lightscribe. I'm tihnking it only does + and not - discs? Any other recommendations? Thanks!

Forgot to add that the cheaper in price it is, the better too. 🙂

why not get whatever drive you want and then a 5.25 external case? even though i didn't look it up, i would doubt that a drive would be only + or - at this point as most of them support everything.

I've lost touch with hardware for the last 2-3 years now so I have no idea. Haha! So I can get a cheapo internal IDE DVDRW and then just enclose it with a cheapo $5 enclosure? Most enclosures now use USB I'm assuming?

just read some reviews on whichever external case you want to verify it works with optical drives. i don't think they are as cheap as $5, but probably $20-$35 or so

Wow.. $20-$35.. Hmm.. if that's the case, I might as well just get that Samsung drive, since a drive is already about $35. Thanks for your input.

Ok.. looks like it'll be cheaper to get a $20 enclosure and a $35 burner. Any suggestions on the enclosure brand and what DVDRW are the better ones? Quality and price are the main concerns. I don't really care about the noise level.

as far as the drive i have had good luck with pioneer, benq, nec and lite-on. currently running a pioneer 111d.

I bought the 16x version of the Samsung external drive about a year ago. I am very happy with it. It's quite, fast and reliable. The only time you can hear it work is during finalizing (even then its quite). The LightScribe works well and it?s produced no coasters.

I'm thinking of this cheapo NEC at newegg: Cheapo $30.00 w/FREE SH. Any experiences with this one?

haven't used that one but i remember reading somewhere that nec isn't making their own drives anymore, i think they are a rebadged sony??? you may want to read over at cdfreaks or afterdawn.com and see what others are saying about this particular unit.

i went with the pioneer 111d due to its excellent reputation making 360 backups: )

I think it's a join venture from Sony and NEC. I forget the company name though. I'll go search around for it. Any other ones you would recommend?

i just wouldn't support sony in any way due to all of their drm/riaa/mpaa b.s. over the years, but that is just me. i try not to benefit them, but i am sure i miss stuff here and there, but not intentionally or to my knowledge

I went ahead and ordered a SAMSUNG|SH-S182D/BEBE DVDRW from newegg.com. $30.99 with free SH using paypal ain't bad at all. Thanks for all the input. 🙂
