Thinking about a vid card upgrade

I'm thinking of upgrading my 6600 GT AGP card to a 6800 Ultra PCI-e card. I the upgrade worth the cost? I have the Asrock 939 Dual SataII mobo so the swap to PCI-e isn't a problem. Or....should I wait and get one of the newer cards. Any comments.

I was looking at a 6800 ultra for $240.00. What's the cost of a 7900GT? I do play games so I would like to get the best bang for the buck.

I have to agree with the previous poster. The 7900 GT is as powerful as the 7800 GTX 512MB. So both of them weigh out the 6800 Ultra by a heavy proportion. I also like the die shrink on the 7900 GT and the fact that it draws less power than a 6800 GS and 6800 Ultra. You should be able to get the 7900 GT PCI-e for around $280.

I have some components I could sell to off set the cost of a 7900GT. I have a Abit NF7 v.2, a XP 2800+ and a 6600GT. That could get me close to where the card won't cost me a ton of cash. I do like the fact that the 7900 is more future proof now than the 6800.

Yes, approx $280 at the lowest for a 7900GT but a little higher for a good factory OCed 7900GT which makes a lot of sense if you do not feel comfortable OCing a card yourself. However, even if you did not want to go that high in price, you can get a factory overclocked 7600GT for $189 which would beat the 6800 Ultra performance wise while drawing less power and generating less heat. There is no reason to buy a 6800 card of any variety at this point in time except for the 6800NU for a handful of specific purposes.
