I would definitely spend the time. That is why I spend 20+ hours a week practising my instrument so that I can play my pieces instead of just listening to recordings of other people play the same thing.

I dont know about the guy using pencil, but the ball-point pen artist someone mentioned does his drawings on an enormous canvas.. I suspect the pencil dude does as well.

I doubt it's a problem of someone being able to do it. I think it's more of someone having the time, energy, and interest to hone that ability. Time is an obvious limitation, same with energy. However, interest is highly fickle. I know people with amazing talent in specific areas but simply have no interest in pursuing.

That, and the law of large numbers.
