I thought it was a great article. I'm all for this guy doing it.

Not that I'm sticking up for him, but all you people calling him a loser should read the article. He works at a law firm, has a ex-model wife and nice home. In my opinion he has a pretty nice life...downloading music is a passion/hobby of his that he takes seriously, so good for him. At least he has something taking up his time rather than CounterStrike or persistent masturbation to internet porn.

That guy couldn't justify his way out of a paper bag, what a dunce. It's a wonder he can afford all that mac equipment, it costs more per pound that gold these days, doesn't it? 😀

You should try doing something useful with all that money and macs. Like a distributed computing project.

i bet he doesnt get all the death metal out there, and i wonder how much foreign music he's grabbing, i believe his goals are impossible but he gets an A for effort.

haha that's exactly what I thought. I'm positive I have some songs that he doesn't even know about. Groups like Frank's Enemy, Incantation, Bathory, Shai'Hulud, Zao, Yakuza. I would bet a hundred bucks he doesn't have any of that. Seriously, when you think about it 900,000 isn't all that many considering how many artists there are, especially the indie/underground ones.

He's still insane though, and, from the article, I mean that literally.

Hey I have a bunch of that stuff!!
Kerrazy huh

wow....an idiotic attorney...go firgure. No offense Mr. uhem...Commander donVito🙂

This man is quite unrealistic to put it mildly. For reference, even itunes has more than a million songs, and they fall WAY far short of "all the music that exists." Okay, so his are @ 256kbits/s; big deal. If it ain't lossless, STFU.

In conclusion, this man has not only set unrealistic goals and is performing poorly, but remains proud of his rather lame accomplishment.

Regardless, there are somethigns he should, perhaps, consider:

1) His little "digital Vortex," sucking all the bandwidth that is holy on the internet, is bound to be noticed by someone with subversive means.
2) AT LEAST half a dozen lawyers are either pressing Macnet or have hired "geek goons" to find this guy
3) THEY WILL DESTROY HIM

I hope his wife's stockpiling her ever-increasing supply of lube, now that he has spent all this time in the 'war room,' because he's going to need every last drop.

I would have thought that owning a 7 bedroom house and marrying an underwear model for the trophy wife would firmly plant you in the upper class instead of "upper middle class", as stated in the article.

Hardly. He's probably just middle, actually.

Money is not what defines class.

Speaking of his wife, who wants to bet that she's getting a regular Human Booster Shot (TM) from some young stud in the community that's more concerned with her body than the latest unreleased album at 256kbps? 😛

From the article:The interaction between The Wife and Doug showed that these two seemed to be one happy couple. The seemed to really like each other; and that my friends, is more rare than you might think.

Damn straight....

well i don't have that many but it did just take me 28 700 MB CD-R's to back up my collection. all perfectly legal of course! 😉

MacNET: Have you ever considered offering a 'black market' iTMS?

Doug: Heavens NO! I don?t think there has been a single song pirated from my collection. Even my kids are not allowed to load up their iPods with any of this.

LMFAO!

For some reason this dude reminds me of Colonel Kurtz at the end of Apocalypse Now.

He's more like Colonel Klink IMO. The whole thing just seems bizarre and silly to me.

Even if, hypothetically, one could somehow accumulate every song ever recorded in the past (which I'll submit is realistically impossible), I'd imagine there is more music constantly being performed and recorded than one could keep up with on a rolling basis, so he'd have to impose some rules (e.g., selecting only music that is commercially released, and/or recorded in a studio) that are likely to lead to his missing some great stuff.

His whole time-capsule goal here strikes me as paranoid, narcissistic, and goofy as well, because all he's doing by accumulating all this stuff is putting all his musical eggs in one basket. It seems to me that the CD medium (which is reasonably durable), and the existence of mp3s effectively mean that music as we know it won't be destroyed by any cataclysmic event (unless the world loses all its ability to generate power as a result of some extinction-level event, in which case his collection will be rendered useless anyway). If his house is somehow destroyed (by fire, bombing, what have you), his whole collection, with all its "historical significance," is no more.

This guy sounds to me as though he suffers from an obsessive-compulsive streak, which he has decided to satisfy by building his collection. On balance I think that's a fairly harmless (albeit selfish and pointless) way of exorcising his demons. The idea that it's somehow noble or useful, though, is delusional IMO.

OK. Have you guys read the comments on this article on the website itself? Alot of people think this article is bogus.

And I'll have to agree with them. This article is totally fake, but entertaining nonetheless.

Theres so many shortcomings to this article, it was obviously meant as an entertaining joke.
The perfect Wife sounds a bit too perfect, not to mention the perfect house, kids, ect.
If he is working 16 hr days, when does he actually have time to do this, and other things.
Cable companies have bandwith limits. Had he a T1 or a T3 ( judging by how rich he is, he could afford this), it would have been more plausible.
900,000 songs in 10 months is pretty much impossible.

The logic behind why he is even doing this completely supports the idea that a story like this can only be made up.

Kinda reminds me of bill henry on 640 AM, If you live in Southern california and listen to Am radio, you might know what I'm talking about. I love articles like this.
